I remember my grandpas dog jumping out the back of the truck when he was doing 40 to chase a jackrabbit it saw. She hit the ground rolled once and took off like it never happened.
Though we used to ride to and from elementary school in the back of my neighbors truck. You didn't need extended cabs back then, the humps over the wheels made great kids seats.

This is based on auto accident fatalaties, not just accidents, so the risk of just being injured is obviously higher, but in order to have an accident where one person dies, 67 million miles have to be driven. Most people are at a very low risk of having a serious car accident. Jumping out of the open window to chase a squirrel is probably a more likely event than your dog getting hurt in an accident with you.

If you want to shame people into keeping dogs from getting hurt by cars, go off on the people that let their dogs roam free in the neighborhood. I'm sure the dog hit by car rate is astronomically higher than the dog hit while in a car rate.

Driving 75 mph through Mississippi one day I ran across these 2 dumbfricks..look at the dog...no leash or nothing.

My dogs would rather take a little risk and enjoy one of their favorite things in life. You should go out to ranch country and have a heart attack when you see border collies and shepherds standing atop truck tool boxes as their owners haul arse down the highway.

I get that you wouldn't want to do that with your Pomeranian and/or shi-tzu though.

she is a great car dog btw and settles in for a peaceful ride after about 2 minutes of looking around
