I use to donate to Red Cross whenever there was a natural disaster and they would advertise for people to donate, but I stopped after hurricane Harvey hit Houston and there was information coming out about how much of the donations actually goes towards what it is supposed to, etc.

Best to give to a church or local group that is actually headed to the scene. Red Cross has way to much overhead and only small portion goes to needy

Nah

I just give money to those kids on the corner of Claiborne and Carrollton with buckets raising money for the Cajun navy.

This. My Dad, WWII who passed away in August, wouldn't give a penny to the Red Cross. A lot of WWII veterans feel the same way.

Personally, I like the Salvation Army.

911 ended it for me.

Reports came out about their donation percentage and how it was divided. I wasn’t thrilled with donating 36% of my donation going to new phone system.

Yes, if you have first hand knowledge and know volunteers going to help; give them something to support their efforts. Help them with money for food, gas, anything to help support their efforts. It will show up on the front lines.

Pretty similar donation rate that goes directly to aide, no?

I though Salvation Army was one of the better ones.

I personally donate to a children's hospital here in St Louis. I don't mess with any of the big national charities.

It seems like they are one of the most trustworthy charities.

Red Cross is a scam and a fraud of a charity.

How no one in the media has written a Weinstein style expose on them yet is beyond me.

frick the Red Cross. I'd pay money to support someone exposing it and destroying it as an organization. If some of their leadership gets a conscience because of the process and sprays their brains all over the ceiling to avoid prison, even better.

Aren't they also the one that was throwing donated food and other items away after Harvey?

I'd much rather give directly to a church or the Salvation Army than any of the big charities. I think Salvation Army's Commander makes less than $100k/year, unlike some of these other charities' CEOs. Makes you wonder how some of them can pay their people so much...

This is why I donate to GoFund Me. It goes directly to the person. No I can’t claim it on my taxes but that shouldn’t be the whole reason you donate.
