That reminds me, I was training a new guy on a press machine at that same factory and the guy on the machine next to ours smashed the ends off his fingers off that same shift. Smashed in a hydraulic press so his index, middle, and ring fingers were all the same length.
His fingertips we're still in his glove when we pulled out out. There was no blood in there though. The press pushed the blood back toward his hand.
The machine had a guard but he was bypassing it "to go faster".

First day on the job. I had absolutely no idea of what my duties were at my new place of work. I was handed the "Penske File" and ordered to work on it. I managed to do nothing for a week. When Mr. Penske came to inquire about the progress of his file, he began to make me an offer for a job at his company, but he was interrupted mid-sentence, leaving me to draw my own conclusions. When my boss, Mr. Tuttle, arrived back from a week's vacation, he reprimanded but did not fire me. Instead, I quit, thinking Mr. Penske had a space for me, much to the disbelief of Mr. Tuttle. When I visited Mr. Penske, it turned out that the entire board of the company had been indicted and the company couldn't hire anyone.

My nuts felt pretty small that day, but having a mortgage to pay and kids to feed made them grow pretty big, in hindsight.

Him: "..." He sighs, gets up and makes a beeline to the boss' office and opens and closes the door. Lots of muffled back and forth shouting and then he storms out.
My boss comes up to me and says "Go on home and you can start tomorrow morning. I'm giving you the day off with pay."
Come to find out later he took all morning cleaning out his former office and wouldn't leave. He was going up to each person and saying goodbye to them one at a time. The boss finally threatened to call the cops if he didn't leave so he left. I get there the next morning and come to find out he changed the password and turned off his/my computer. Good times.
That guy must have sucked really bad. For them to hire someone to replace him and forget to tell him until the new person shows up.. And pretty much tell him "oh yeah. We hired someone to replace you. We are letting you go. Have a nice life".

I was moving to Houston and was hired by a law firm after interviewing with a particular partner. About two months later I make the move and show up the first day, only to find that the partner who had hired me had unwillingly resigned after having a mental breakdown and converting office funds, and the office manager had been fired also for converting office funds to personal use. Luckily, there was still plenty of work to do so I stayed.

Showed up on a bus with 80 other guys. Got off the bus. They were yelling and screaming at us. Shaved our heads , made us wear the same clothes. Great fun.

My son while in college took a part time job at Walmart working in the home section. He shows up first day and meets his manager and gets his name tag. Manager says "Im going to go smoke a cigarette and when I get back we will start your training."
My son stood at that Walmart paint desk and milled around that section for a few hours. The manager never showed back up. After three hours and five or six customers asking my son questions or wanting him to mix paint, he said screw it, laid his name tag on the desk and walked out. They never contacted him again and Im still not sure if that manager ever finished that cig.

Had a guy start working at the store I worked at in high school. The manager introduces him to me and tells me to get him acclimated, kind of testing me. I tell the guy to walk around the store for about an hour and just notice where things are. He looks at me with this puzzled look on his face. I told him to just get used to the store. "Just walk around the stored." Dude turns around, and walks out the door.
The manager and I looked at each other for a second, then followed him outside. He was about to make the corner. Dude was literally going to walk "around the store."

We clock-in as you enter our building with a thumbprint scanner. Unfortunately the fire alarm is also located in the same area. New lady was so overwhelmed with everything that she pulled the fire alarm with her thumb on her way out for lunch. Our manager tried to make light of it later by saying it was a good fire drill. But she didn't come back for day 2.

On my first day as a Federal employee, I took a massive dump and plugged up a toilet. It flooded the bathroom and hall.

I got food poisoning the night before my first day of my first job out of LSU. Up all night puking my guts out with a terrific stomach ache. I had to be at the plant for 6 am so on about two hours sleep I make the 45 minute drive to the plant. On the way I drink a whole bottle of Pepto to try to settle my stomach. Of course they have me work outside all day in the June Louisiana heat. Longest day of my life but I made it and worked at this company for 23 years.

Back in the day my manager hired a new rep, pharmaceutical sales, and sent him off for two weeks initial training.
Upon his return my manager went with on his first call. He told me they got out the car, new guy got his bag and they started for the door.
Manager enters and turns around and no new guy. He walks outside and said come on and the guy said NO... Manager said your first call is one you will always remember and it will be fine. The new guy said that guy's a doctor and he is a lot smarter than I am. Manager said that is your job and the guy said no I can't do it, I quit.
Manager told me,
"I really blew it with that hire."

Thoroughly enjoying this thread. When I first started at Nicholls I would high tail it back to the city every weekend for work and to party. I got a job at rouses on airline. Starting off I only worked on Sunday nights. I worked in dairy and frozen. None of the managers gave me any shite. I was stoned 24/7 and still kept up impeccable customer service skills. I also was selling weed at the time. My first day I sold a gram to the guy training me. Within the first hour. We both got fricked up out in the parking lot.
I miss those Sunday nights. I stayed there almost 2 more years picking up more shifts when school allowed. They had a daq bar in the same shopping center. I used to go pound beers on my lunch break then go back to work.
I'd like to add more to this. A year in I'm doing a really good job. I'm ultra OCD about keeping the shelves neat. I'm stocking everything from the back I can. Rotating the milk and eggs religiously. All the while, still stoned. It wasn't even funny. I just did my work and kept to myself.
One day on my break in the parking lot I see one of the night stockers. Big ole wacka flocks looking brother. He wa fricking around with this trashy white dude. Well this turns to that. Next thing I know I'm driving around the backside of Livingston place smoking these guys out.
It was hilarious. They always thought I was some goodu two shoe mofo. I was having more fun then they ever did with less bullshite

first day of a new sysadmin job. my entire department is out of office. i show up early, talk to the secretary, and sit in my desk. i set up a little bit of personal stuff, but have no login to my computer. i call my boss and ask for the domain admin password. he gives it to me, i log in, create my account, start poking around the network, learning a few things.
then i sit for 5 hours.
i've met a few other department heads that came by, but not a soul from my own department. we close shop at 4:30. at 4:25 another department head knocks on my door and says "your server room is flooding" and turns around and walks out. i get the entry key, go in there and sure enough, they were powerwashing the floor above my server room for new floors and i had about 3 inches of water in there. it leaked through and dropped about 4 of those formica drop ceilings in the middle of my floor. i get ahold of maintenance to help me clean and power down my low to the floor equipment and start squeeging out my room. after i'm sure everything is dry, i plug equipment back in, do my best to hope that everything i can tell is back up and finally finish about 8 and go home.
then i sit for 5 hours.
