Emergency room physician John Gavin can’t identify the exact patient from whom he contracted the coronavirus, but he’s confident he picked up the illness working one of his 12-hour shifts in Amite, Louisiana’s small, rural emergency room.

“There were just so many people who had so many vague symptoms that any of them could have been that person,” he said. “We see a lot of viral-type illnesses.”

But Gavin, 69, is certain that before his coronavirus diagnosis on March 9, officials at Hood Memorial Hospital, where he works, hadn’t made any specific changes to protocols or procedures to protect doctors and nurses from contracting the disease.

My PCP told me earlier she was sure she has been in contact with it at this point

I am sure a lot of Dr’s & nurses would test positive

None of us are being required to mask up. It’s dumb

My PCP told me I probably had it in December when I had flu like symptoms but didn’t have the flu.

If I get it, the last place I’m going is to a hospital or urgent car. Not unless it was pneumonia.

I’m an ER doc. The fear is real. There is a massive shortage of the type of masks we need to protect ourselves. CDC is saying if we don’t have protective masks we should wear a bandanna over our face. I’m not kidding.

Can’t wait for their updated safe sex recommendations for Saran Wrap and a rubber band if a condom isn’t available.

Docs are being told they get one mask and to wear it between patients. While this probably doesn’t cause patient harm if you don’t touch them with the mask it’s not a great set up. Some docs are spraying their masks with alcohol, bringing them home, and reusing them on their next shift.

I went to my doctor today and he was wearing a mask. He said that with the amount of people that potentially have this he would hate to have it and not know it and then give it to another patient. Pretty proactive

My daughter works as an RN in a hospital ICU and they have been assigned one N95 mask they have to take home and clean and keep wearing. Gloves are in short supply as well. They caught some of the staff stealing masks and gloves for home use and fired them. They have to go through security on their way out now to get their purses and backpacks checked.

How our govt let critical items like this be outsourced in China along with our pharmaceutical supply is criminal.

Doctors should have bought their own N95 masks like I did in January since clearly it is too difficult for hospital administrators to maintain an inventory.

How the Fack medical people didn't see this coming from a mile away blows my mind.

Even in our procedure rooms we have to keep masks locked up or put away because we’ve had patients and family members trying to steal handfuls of them.

frick you a-hole. YOUR hospital buys the supplies from the lowest bidder. not the govt. Same for pharmaceuticals. and if the medical community didn't charge $25,000.00 for a one hour hernia surgery thereby driving costs sky-high, we wouldn't be sourcing the cheapest price all the time in an effort to lower prices.

oh and by the way, why didn't your hospital stock up on masks and gloves? why is it the governments fault that your supply chain sucks?

Why the hell would you buy a N95... contributing to the shortage? Yea medical people world wide couldn’t predict this mainly because the Chinese are hoarding information and there are so many unknowns about it’s transmission and how virulent it is. I work in the icu at one of the largest hospitals in the dfw metroplex, facing coronavirus everyday, intubating people who no longer can breathe on their own, developing ARDS on the vent from pneumonia, then getting septic and requiring pressors for Bp support - and then dying

You think you’re entitled to a mask? When we are breathing that air in every shift every week?

Stay safe at home snowflake, the doctors and nurses are in the trenches trying to fight this for you

My nine month old daughter got tubes this morning at an outpatient surgery facility. These two parents in the waiting room had more PPE on than any of the facility staff.

No one was wearing a mask as far as staff
Receptionist wore gloves to take my temp
Nurse wore gloves to give me a Tetanus shot after Dr. left

If you have a cough they will give you a mask
When I left 2 people in waiting room had them on

She was also pretty pissed that when I called to confirm my appt they told me to come in
She told if I need anything else just to call nurse & she will handle over the phone
I’m thinking she regrets selling out to OLOL right now

I made an arse out of myself (again) last night in the main CV-19 thread due to many rumors of hospitals out of supplies being fake. Obviously it really is happening though. Any word on more supplies coming in to hard hit areas?

What’s the hold up on the mass production of these masks?

I know I'm probably gonna get laughed at and made fun of for saying this, but whatever. My quilt guild got an email from an ER doc locally who asked us to make fabric covers they can put over their masks since there is such a shortage. We have fired up our sewing machines and production is in high gear now that we have the guidelines and specs they want. I hope it helps.
