I’d rather have a higher quality 55 inch than a lesser 70.

I am a huge sports fan, a movie nut, and watch way too much television, but I’m in the market for a new TV and reading reviews/boards about the the options and there are 80+” TVs that people are putting in their living room. That seems ridiculous.

If you have a theater room that is for that purpose I get it, but it is absurd what some people are putting in the main “entertaining” rooms in their homes. Dare I say even trashy? TV's shouldn't be the centerpiece to a damn house. 65” is more than enough television and I just can’t see a reason to get past that. To me it feels like it has gotten to a point of diminishing returns.

Downvote away...

frick all that. I can't stand the trend of the fireplace as the focal point of the room with a TV mounted over it a shitty viewing angle. We had our builder leave out the fireplace.

My home theater is my main source of entertainment and leisure time, and I spend more time in the living room than any room in the house, so it's going to be how my wife and I think it best works for us.

Besides you, yourself called it the "entertaining" room. That is one of the ways we entertain. Everyone that comes to my house wants to see and hear my home theater.

Are we supposed to just sit and stare at the unlit fireplace while we visit?

For sure, but we can still talk about it

I don't care if you get tattoos on your face, but it's still fun to discuss.

I have a 75 inch TV I sit five feet from.

Makes watching porn in 4k really exciting.

With broadcasting now days and all the additional BS they put on the screen like live score trackers, half screen commercials, bottomline and network symbols you need a big screen to actually see the game.

You're supposed to talk to each other and not watch TV (outside of a sports event).

Fireplace creates nice ambiance for that. As does a sound system, but that can be properly hidden in the ceiling.

I just bought 49 inch tv, and that is plenty big. TV sizes are becoming some of the most overrated things ever.

They do seem big at first, but after a couple days you don't notice anymore.

terrible for your health. Just turn on Fireplace for your home in 4K on Netflix.

There is no amount of wood smoke that is good to breathe. It is at least as bad for you as cigarette smoke, and probably much worse. (One study found it to be 30 times more potent a carcinogen.) The smoke from an ordinary wood fire contains hundreds of compounds known to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic, and irritating to the respiratory system. Most of the particles generated by burning wood are smaller than one micron—a size believed to be most damaging to our lungs. In fact, these particles are so fine that they can evade our mucociliary defenses and travel directly into the bloodstream, posing a risk to the heart. Particles this size also resist gravitational settling, remaining airborne for weeks at a time.

quote:

Children who live in homes with active fireplaces or woodstoves, or in areas where wood burning is common, suffer a higher incidence of asthma, cough, bronchitis, nocturnal awakening, and compromised lung function. Among adults, wood burning is associated with more-frequent emergency room visits and hospital admissions for respiratory illness, along with increased mortality from heart attacks. The inhalation of wood smoke, even at relatively low levels, alters pulmonary immune function, leading to a greater susceptibility to colds, flus, and other respiratory infections. All these effects are borne disproportionately by children and the elderly.

The way my “formal” living room is setup the only place that a TV makes sense is for it to be mounted to the fireplace. I’m going to get one of these when I replace it:

To those of us who grew up thinking 19" was a large screen, 65" is like a movie screen.

We have a 55 inch tv in the living room and a 75 inch in the basement lair. I actually went too small in the basement for the wall cutout. Could have went with an 82 inch but didn't want to spend the extra grand for the tv I wanted.
