Do you think the size of televisions in living rooms is getting absurd?

I am a huge sports fan, a movie nut, and watch way too much television, but I’m in the market for a new TV and reading reviews/boards about the the options and there are 80+” TVs that people are putting in their living room. That seems ridiculous.

If you have a theater room that is for that purpose I get it, but it is absurd what some people are putting in the main “entertaining” rooms in their homes. Dare I say even trashy? TV's shouldn't be the centerpiece to a damn house. 65” is more than enough television and I just can’t see a reason to get past that. To me it feels like it has gotten to a point of diminishing returns.

It’s trashy if you live in a cramped 2k sq ft house

It might make sense if you’re in a big house with massive rooms

While I agree with your point, think of how absurd the above quote would've sounded just 10-15 years ago

As technology gets more efficient and cheaper, people get more used to the larger TVs

Personally anything over 55-65 is obnoxious unless the room is huge. Sometimes a 65" can look like a 32" if it is on a huge wall/room.

yes. A guy I work with has a small apartment with this absurdly huge TV hanging on the wall. it just looks stupid. I could see if in a really large room, but not in his tiny apt.

I’ve never really put a priority on TVs, I have 2. A 43 inch plasma that I bought about 8-9 years ago, and a 46 inch LCD that was left with my current home. I’ll probably get a new one and replace the 43 inch in the next year, but I don’t think I’m going bigger than ~60ish.

As long as it's not mounted above the fireplace. That's trashy.

We have two 65in tv's in a second living room that doubles as our game room. Both have xbox, ps4, and switches hooked up to them.

Also have an 120 inch projector screen with 4k projector in our main living room.

Even then, I want bigger and more.

Yeah I get that, fair point.

But They aren't going to get much thinner than they are now, no real point.

And to the above poster, I've got a big house with a big living room and 65" is PLENTY. It's an absurdly large TV if you think about it.

As the rooms get bigger and the distance to the television increases, the television has to increase in size to account for the decrease in screen size relative to the viewing position.

Basically, not as long as living rooms keep getting bigger.

Of course, also for shits and giggles or rock measuring contests, but that’s true of almost everything.

Firm believer in this as well, I'm just wanting to discuss it.

I don't give AF if someone has a 90" TV in their living room TBH. Just a weird trend to me.

Nope, I have a 75" but it's due to my wife's eyesight issues ... and she has a 65" hanging in the bedroom.

macular degeneration/myopic degeneration is a bitch.

I grew up with a 19" TV in our living room, so yeah, my 55", which is I guess "small" these days, does seem kinda absurd

I don't have some big "great" room though, just a small living room, so I definitely don't need anything larger
