Do you think about where the keys are when you type?

I think this is a Gen X and an Elder Millennial thing. I took typing in 5th and 6th grade. Give me home row, and I can type 90 words a minute. My parents? They hunt and peck. My nephews and niece? They hunt and peck. My generation, we type like a Tommy Gun and never look down.

What's more, I don't have a visual map in my mind. I don't think where the keys are. It's all muscle memory. The only time I frick up is when my hand strays from the home row.

Is home row even still a thing?

Are you under the impression that no one has learned to type in the last couple of decades?

And no, I don’t think about where the keys are, outside of special characters, but I type simple “conversation” text at about 100wpm, so not a ton of time to think about

No. I just let my fingers do their ting. Typing/Excel was the most useful high school class I took. It drives me nuts how long it takes my dad to type with one finger.

I can type really really well when I am typing from my brain. But If I have to look at paper in order to type, or dictate what someone is saying, my skills go to shite.

Uh, no. How fricking stupid do you have to be to think they're not in South Florida?

I had an uncle who could type almost that fast only using his two index fingers.

Same here. I had a typing class in 7th grade and also had a research paper due so I forced myself to type it correctly and have never looked back.

Our company keeps talking about using AI for documents but since I can type as fast as I can think it would take longer to come up with the right prompts than to just do it myself.

I was just talking about this the other day. I think the words and my fingers go 100 mph (or 100 strokes per minute) without even thinking about letters.

Genuinely don't see how that's possible. I'm using 10 fingers at roughly 100 WPM and would be lucky to get 40 WPM with just two fingers.

The F and the J on my two desktop keyboards and two laptop keyboards have the tactile reminder on them, that the home row is still a thing.

I got up to 110 wpm in high school. However, this was when every keyboard was essentially the exact same across PCs. Now I've screwed myself up by having a full sized keyboard, a 70% size keyboard, and a laptop keyboard that get used every day.

You’ve been outpacing the field with shitty OPs lately. Are you not getting enough attention at home?

I imagine “almost” is going a lot of heavy lifting in his post

The keyboard size itself doesn’t bother me; moving between keyboards with different key pitches does. Until I spend a few minutes warming up, moving from my mechanical keyboard to my completely flat laptop keyboard probably shaves 30wpm off my typing speed.

They are always in my wife’s purse.

But good luck finding her purse. It’s like the semi colon of keyboard.

No, I never look and can type like a damn secretary. It's a generational thing.
