Did you grow up before Germ Theory and not know that viruses, bacteria, microbes, etc. are usually microscopic? If you don't mind people tracking in that stuff, that's fine, but don't pretend that it has the same rational basis as your hat rule.

Never understood this one, and I don't enforce it at the house. Mrs P gets kinda pissed when I don't back her up on this, but it's the best way to eat corn! I'm not eating my corn uncomfortably just for this bullshite.

But the rest I agree with.

Don gets in the elevator and some guy behind him has a hat on. Don takes it off the guy's head and jams it in his chest.

I'm guessing this 1967 or so.

I can't see the photo from work and barely notice it otherwise, but I'm pretty sure they're in the hangar bay of an aircraft carrier and they're rendering honors.

Not usually, but if it makes eating something easier and less messy, I have no qualms about it.

Do you slurp your soup?
I try not to, but I don't think it's a big deal unless it's extremely loud.

Well this has sanitary reasons for following so unlike the others, it actually has a functional basis.

He asked what the point was of some of the customs. I was saying a lot of things may seem pointless on their face, but having manners is the point.

this sucks when you're eating at a big table and the dude next to you is taking up all the room because he's sprawled out at the table

By "no different" I meant "my house my rules." I don't require guests to take their shoes off and my floors are fine. As a matter of fact, I remember everyone's floors being just fine growing up before that silly shite took hold. And I don't walk around with mud and dogshit on my feet. I live in the suburbs (plenty of pavement) and work at Dundar Mifflin.

I take my shoes off, not only because I don't want whatever I've walked through on my friends' floors, but because it's the polite thing to do. Hats are different. You're entitled to set whatever rules you want, but that doesn't mean they aren't ridiculous.

Cool story. If you walk around outside with your shoes on, there is dirt on them, along with whatever else you've walked through.

Really? There are germs and other micro-organisms and viruses that I can't see?

Wow. I really shouldn't have played so much Tetris on my TI-83 in school.

Or maybe I'm also aware that the human body is well tooled to manage most common germs, and that your keyboard probably has a comparable number of germs (by density) as the floor in my office. Now if you have a floor-bound baby or a sick or aging relative (someone on chemo or with an autoimmune disorder) sure. Otherwise, my shoes aren't going to make your family sick.

Honors are always rendered under cover and a hangar bay isn't "indoors". It's cavernous.

most manners are developed because they affect other people. Me chewing with my mouthful is gross.

Me wearing a hat indoors simply cant offend someone "because it does". Why?

Probably not, but it's still nasty, and you will remove them in my house. "My house my rules", only this particular rule actually has validity.

I bet your house is a popular place to watch the games on Saturdays.
