I've been married for 19 years. The protocol is when I shake my glass that means she is to get up and refill it. I stay seated.

Only for my wife, and only at very formal dinners, etc. If we stop to eat at Chili's after running errands, I think it would be a weird thing to do.

A few other basics for the OP (since your dad apparently didn't teach you shite) if on a date with a woman:

- open the car door for her
- if walking next to a street you should be on the street side of the sidewalk
- if walking up stairs, you are behind her
- if going down stairs, you are in front of her

Thanks. I appreciate it. I wasn't aware about the going down stairs in front of her thing.

You should always sit to her left also. I see guys at restaurants all the time sitting to their woman's right.

I did when I went to dinner before freshman homecoming and looked/felt like a total tool. Never again.

I was on the wall-side of a booth though.

What do you mean? Wouldn't that mean we are sitting on the same side of the table?

I always get up when my wife does at home. I am very particular about my sammiches, and it's much easier to provide her some "feedback" if she fricks something up.

Why should it matter if the guy sits on the right or left? Besides, if the she is left-handed and he is right-handed, then it's more practical for him to sit on the right.

That refers to a group dinner setting (think a long table). I've heard it suggested that in large parties husbands and wives should actually be separated to facilitate mingling amongst the guests.

Most of this is pretty dated and silly to most people.

Any man who doesn't is a heathen as far as I'm concerned. Maybe not at a bar, but that's about it.

I'd say that's a pretty safe assumption.

No but in certain settings they stand up when I leave the table. Wanna guess what kind of beer I drink?

Yes, stand up and take the opportunity to go outside and fart while she's in the bathroom
