If I use an estimate of my family car ($25,000 purchase price) life being 150,000 Miles, that comes out to $0.167/mile of depreciation. Is it too simple of a view to determine that if price of rental for trip is less than .167 x mileage of trip, then I should rent a vehicle? If it is too simple, what other factors need I consider in making this decision?
Pay for insurance on that rental? Then it's not economical.
Crash that rental without insurance, and it's definitely not economical.
and cars last 250-300k miles now. Unless you got a Ford Sedan or some shite.

My truck is more comfortable than most affordable rental cars. I've driven it to each coast with no problems

You can get a lot more miles on a $25k vehicle. And road trips would be highway miles.
I’d only rent if I needed more room or some other special feature like towing ability or trunk space.

I really don’t get the appeal of road trips.
I guess if I had 3 other people to pay for, I’d understand it more.

If something goes wrong with a rental car, you call the car company and get a replacement. (That's happened to me in Arizona (water line leak), Nova Scotia (breaks stopped stopping quickly), lost third gear (Michigan).
About the cost of insurance on a rental car: often covered by your regular car insurance and some levels of credit cards.

I can see it being a minor economic benefit, but if your personal car is suitable for the trip the time and effort to rent the car and what not would not be worth it to me. Plus as said, I driving our own vehicle.

Always rent for road trips works out well

Well, you have to drive if going to Colorado, Washington, Oregon or California (and probably some other states) because it is too risky to fly back with that stuff in your check bag. So, if you rent a car, I guess you could even deny ownership if pulled over. So, renting sounds like a good idea.

Yeaa. Imagine paying for those 4 shitbiscuits I have, 6 total.
This year it'll be Destin for the Summer and Auburn(for the game) in the Fall.
I'm a glutton for punishment.
but the longest we've taken them was Fayetteville and Knoxville. Not TOOO bad. Doable in a single day drive.

No way in hell im doing road trips again. All it took was one drive alone from Dallas to New Orleans and 10 hours later.
Not to mention, the mileage plus insurance would have to run that rental bill up quite a bit.
I'll fly and be there in an hour. Thanks.

No, I bought my vehicle because it's what I like to drive. I don't want to drive some rental shitbox for hours on end. Although, a few weeks ago I did have a rental 2018 Navigator and that thing was
!

Why don’t you just buy another car and use it as your traveling car?

Lol, ugh yeah quite the difference. Not to mention, a road trip allows you to do multiple locations. Where as flying you have to either rent multiple rental cars and deal with flying multiple places.
I understand most people would consider it hell as we have a 4 and 2 year old, but I just went on a 33 hour road trip total through Nashville, to Chicago for 5 nights (partly to visit family), and then to Chattanooga for a graduation and back. To do that by flying would have been 3x as much.

On rental car you don't have to work on it. It breaks down u call they bring u another geez

We have done this in the past... but only when our cars get up above 75K miles. For us it's a matter of making sure something doesn't go to crap while we are out of town. Under 75K miles, I'm confident in my mechanic catching stuff and thus bearing a freak thing, we should be fine.

Most places, mileage is unlimited, and between your personal insurance and credit card coverage, no need to buy their insurance.

We purchase our large SUVs (suburban and Yukon XL) for exactly those trips....and it worked out well.

I don't take trips over 8 hours. It called flying.
I flew home yesterday, the flight was 1 hour and 50 minutes, but add in travel to and from the airports, rental car return, security, waiting at the gate, waiting to take off, it took 7 hours of my time, I could have driven it in 12, and probably been less exhausted.

I fly a lot for work, so I'd much prefer driving in my leisure time.
I drive my truck everywhere. Crew cab full size and I get 22mpg highway. No reason to be uncomfortable.
