We are often making long trips to visit family/friends, and we drive often to do so. We always drive our family car but I am starting to wonder if I should rent instead.

If I use an estimate of my family car ($25,000 purchase price) life being 150,000 Miles, that comes out to $0.167/mile of depreciation. Is it too simple of a view to determine that if price of rental for trip is less than .167 x mileage of trip, then I should rent a vehicle? If it is too simple, what other factors need I consider in making this decision?

I've never crunched numbers like that - I just rent because I don't want to put all those miles on my own car.

I don't take trips over 8 hours. It called flying.

I've rented for a road trip before. The savings in fuel alone made it worth renting the car vs. driving my truck.

No. I purchased my vehicle with those types of trips in consideration.

If something went wrong on the drive, I want to have my own vehicle. I know it, I am comfortable working on it, and I would hate to deal with a rental car god forbid something serious happened.

My parents drive everywhere. They recently drove to Jackson Hole and all that shite up there in my Dad’s truck.

They use to fly, but my dad is a retired Texas Ranger/US Marshall. Once he retired he could no longer carry his pistol onto the flight and they stopped flying entirely.

I have no idea how they do it. It sounds miserable. But they are both retired so I guess they have the time.

No. I bought a car to drive it. I don’t plan to sell it, ever. Highway miles are easy on vehicles.

To answer your question, also consider tire wear and oil changes to start.

Road trips can be fun. We did it every summer when I was a kid. You see things you wouldn't see any other way.
