Any “new technology” wasn’t affordable at my house until it wasn’t new anymore.

When I was about 10 years old, my parents bought me a computer for like $2000. It had no hard drive, everything had to be run off disks. It only had 1 mb of ram, and the processor was a whole 20mhz.
We also had this really huge microwave. I remember my mama telling me they paid around $1000 for it. It lasted close to 30 years though.

Over $1000 for a VCR back in '76.
Quasar VR1000 it appears. Had it's own unique cassettes and predated VHS.

We had a decent amount of technology at ours. I remember we had a commodore 64 computer. My mom had one of those bag cell phones that was like $1.50 per minute to use

I bought an Indus GT disk drive for my Atari 800XL in approximately 1984 for around $500. Worth it.

I remember saving up 120$ to get a color 13 in cable ready with a remote for my room , took all summer, plus convincing my mom to let me drill holes in the walls to run the cables... I miss the days when u could put cable in every room like that.

In 1988 got an IBM clone built for around $1,000. 12k Ram 30 meg hard drive and an amber text screen. Used a word processor, spread sheet and report generator program called First Choice.

I canceled my cable a few years ago and Cox never turned it off. I had free cable in every room for a year until they went all digital.

I do remember the first color television my parent bought. Around 1965 or so ... nice console RCA with probably a 16" - 18" screen. And I remember running outside to turn the pole our antennae was mounted on so that the channel of choice would have better reception.
With the trusty vise grips on the channel knob.

Same here but it was not color. Some kind of Philco. 18" maybe.
And I was the pole turner too. WAFB and WBRZ only.

I think TI calculators in the early '70's were over a hondo, handheld.

The first computer I ever worked on was a PC Jr around 1982.
No HD, two 5 1/4” floppies, 64k RAM, color 640x480 CRT, and a dot matrix printer. Belonged to a friend’s parents and cost around $7000.
I upgraded the memory to 512k. It was a rack upgrade, no SIMMs or expansion cards back then.

$2000 for a microwave in 1980. It was the size of a regular oven. The thing worked until 2005.
When microwaves first came out on the market they were super expensive. I remember my mom wanting one for years.

Roberts reel to reel tape deck.
I think my dad paid around $1K for it back in the early 70s.
I've still got it and think it weighs 80-90 lbs.

Before the microwave my mom would reheat everything back up for us in the oven nothing like dried up steak and dried up mac and cheese
Those microwaves revolutionized reheating food and tv dinners.

Microwave ovens were $800.00 when they first came out.
Edit: I see someone said 2k. I guess we had an el cheapo.

My dad had a bag phone in his car - with voice commands! in like 1991. I don't even want to know

New VCR ran me $399 in 1990. Friends whose families had them in the early 80s paid $1,000 and more.
