Friday night you went and rented a couple of movies for the weekend and maybe a PS1 game. Then you went to Pizza Hut (back when it was okay) and got a couple of pizzas.

The good ole days.

I don’t “miss” it, but there is a nostalgia and memory factor to it. Just reminds me of simpler times and spending time with friends and family.

I take my kids to a store called 1/2 Price Books. They have a used DVD section with a nice selection. We go as a reward to the kids as they get to pick out their movie (with our help). Each movie is like $3-8

We’ve amassed a pretty good collection of Disney, 80-90s movies and all time classics

I think everyone in here misses the nostalgia of the movie rental places.

If today we switched it up and brought back Blockbuster and got rid of on demand rentals, everyone would be clamoring to go back to the on demand. It’s so much easier and more convenient.

I miss the ability to rent older movies and be able to find literally any movie you wanted. Today, prices are lower and streaming is convenient, but selection is way down.

Seems to be quite a few of those still around the midwest.

From wiki they apparently have over 700 stores

Also from wiki

quote:

In addition to the brick and mortar store front, Family Video has branched off into other markets such as real estate, 24-hour fitness centers, cell phones, and cable television.[6] The company also sells new and previously used items online.[7] Family Video expanded into the Canadian market in 2012.[8] In 2013, following the continued decline of competing video rental stores, Family Video formed a partnership with Marco's Pizza providing space for the franchise in many of its stores. The company is using the partnership as a way to deliver video rentals with pizza orders. Family Video also leases space to other retailers such as hair salons and fitness centers.[9][10] Unlike much of its competition, Family Video owns the real estate housing their stores, helping them to avoid unsuccessful lease negotiations that led to the demise of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery, which includes Hollywood Video.[11] And rather than depending on the revenue-sharing model used by others in the business, the chain buys and owns their movies, allowing them to keep all the rental profit.[12] In addition, it owns a fiber-optic network in the Central Illinois region, called iTV-3,[13] as well as a small chain of fitness centers named StayFit-24.

Pizza delivery with video is a pretty slick idea. The people running this show are way smarter than blockbuster folks. They are diversified and innovative. They won’t go out of business anytime soon

I have a very difficult decision to make. It's like last week I was at the video store. Do I watch "Devil Wears Prada" again or do I finally get around to seeing "Sophie's Choice"? It is what you would call a classic difficult decision.

Mom and Pop video stores, yes.

Blockbuster, nope.

Frankly I like Redbox, mostly because I can look for movies and reserve them online. And it's pretty damn cheap to rent a movie from them. If you sign up for email shite, they give you discounts and shite all the time.

Some people use to wait til Tuesday or Wednesday about 5 mins before they closed to go in, grab a porn, check out and leave.. Because no one was usually in there at the time.

Video 2 Go in New Iberia had a drive thru to avoid this type of embarrassment.

Hell no I don't miss blockbuster. Damn late fees used to eat my arse up. I'd much rather rent it from Amazon, DirecTV, or any of the numerous places online.

These threads are fricking bullshite.

If people missed it that much, then you could make some serious money.

Truth is, after a couple of experiences when you get to reminisce, you'll go back to not going to those stores.

you're missing out. There are some really good ones. Almost all movies at the top of the all time great movies list are worth it.

My wife was like that. Every time I pick a movie to watch and the date starts with a 1, she gives me the look. I tell her to give it 30 mins, if she's not into it I'll switch. And most times she's hooked by the half hour mark

This.

Sure, there is the nostalgia factor. You'd go to the store with your gf, or your friends, pick out what you wanted (new releases, favorites...anything, really) you'd pick up pizzas on the way home and it even the camaraderie of that part was a piece of a helluva fun night.

What sets it apart from now, is that they actually had the movie you wanted to watch. Pretty much always. There was never any question about which subscription service had the rights to it, or if any did at all. You could get what you wanted.

Other than the 6 minute drive that TH03 bitches about, it was definitely better than Netflix and Prime, and their continually shrinking catalogs.

Most of the big streaming services like Netflix(streaming only plan) and Prime aren't a replacement for video stores. They're more like premium channels. That's what the Netflix dvd plan and online rentals are for. I can rent just about any movie I can think between the Netflix dvd plan and online rentals so I don't agree that video stores had a better selection. You're comparing the wrong services.
