My dad and his neighbor got in the HOA in their hood after getting harassed by the lonely old bitches constantly. They would try to fine people for leaving a boat in the driveway for a day, too many people parking in driveways that were 30-50 yards long (and all lived there), try and make people change their lighting scheme at night, etc.

My dad and his buddy got a few things accomplished (renegotiated grass contract, painting mailboxes, replacing gas lamps, etc), but basically filibustered the other two old hags on any action they tried to take against residents. They'd both come home after a meeting and get drunk and laugh at how pissed the old women were. That lasted for a year, and everyone quit.

If you don't live in a trashy neighborhood with trashy people, you don't need one IMHO

My HOA kicks arse. They are quick to hand out fines for tall grass, unsightly boats in driveways, and trash cans being left on curbs for more than a day. Several of my neighbors bitch, but houses in our neighborhood sell at a premium and seldom stay on the market longer than a month or two.

I'll never, ever live with one again. If you read the bylaws, you'll see that they basically write in clauses that allow them to charge you whatever they deem "necessary," for any reason. Example: my trash can was visible from the street on a non-collection day (apparently a violation), so I was sent a letter and charged a $10 "mailing fee."

Come to find out no one in that neighborhood actually sat on any board, or was in any way involved with the HOA. The developer handed over the association to a property management company that basically does nothing but ghost run a bunch of HOA's all over town, just collecting dues and taking advantage of the BS fines that the bylaws allow them to levy.

Anyone who likes HOA's is basically a terrorist in my book.

ive seen "real" adults bitch about the stupidest shite.

They are what they should be fore until you get that anal power seeking dork on the board who doesnt know the difference between things that will hurt the neighborhood's value vs something that just wouldnt matter but is against code.

Well, I don't live there anymore. I've managed to find a place where people live peacefully without being triggered every time they see a boat while they are driving to work.

No HOA for me. Older established neighbored with home values from 250-350k. Everyone keeps their place looking good and yards in decent shape. Location and size of homes seem to keep the values up and the trash out. We do get a shite load of solicitors however

A neighbor put a prefabbed garden buildings (like Home Depot sells) in his back yard a few years ago. They are 'illegal' by HOA rules and nothing was said about it, until he painted 'NY' (the NY Yankees logo) on one wall...
The building was removed a week later.

Median prices home where I live in around 500k. Have a minority family move next door and paint house pink with a car on cinder blocks in the front yard and go be an adult.

So you are racist. I bet you like Trump.

Why should a prefab garden building in a backyard (I assume it is fenced) be illegal?

HOAs most of the time are enforced like leash laws. Use common sense and there won't be an issue.

The problem is that there are some without common sense. Digging a pool in the front yard without HOA approval, much like letting an aggressive dog roam, will never go over well.

That's why they make vanilla, & chocolate. Everyone has different tastes. If somebody put some shite up like that in my hood I'd politely ask them if they lost their fricking mind.

Again all neighborhood HOA's by law must outline costs and all covenants, codes, and restrictions before selling property. All existing home real estate transactions must disclose and provide this info as well, except buyer beware states.

Not all HOA's are created equal. Some have boards with kids who got the shite kicked out of them in high school and use power anytime they can.

You are absolutely free to not live in one of these communities.

my HOA allows them but it has to be approved. i'm thinking painting trashy sports logos on the side is a bit far.
