The sad thing is, it's really not if you have a local government worth a shite. I've seen neighborhoods without an HOA but who had a Neighborhood Association that still worked with city services to make sure property owners were keeping up their yards and staying within zoning restrictions.

Like others said, pain in the arse, but necessary evil unfortunately. If people were responsible, they wouldn't have to exist

I hate HOA and "planned" communities.

Yep... The five parks, the natural greenbelts, the multi use hike and bike trails, the disc golf course, the pool with slides and splash pad, the basketball court, the tennis court, the volleyball pit, and all the kids playgrounds, sucks in my planned community.

The entry ways and thoroughfares that are landscaped and maintained perfectly and make you feel like your hood has pride in itself also suck.

I mean really who would want the quality of life of being able to enjoy a safe neighborhood and have places for your kids to play.

I would rather just sit in my house in my underwear.

I have access to all of this a short bike ride/walk from my house in Scottsdale without having to be in a HOA neighborhood.

Again...this is basically most of the city of Scottsdale. I don't have to live in a HOA neighborhood to have this.

I guess the difference is that most new neighborhoods are in closed off areas in a semi-rural part of town where there is a lack of town parks and town pools.

See to me....that would suck. I have family and friends here that live in these new planned communities way out on the west side of Phoenix(past the Cardinals stadium). Yeah they are nice and new...but way the frick away from anything you would want to do.

I would rather live in an older neighborhood with some charm in a part of town that has easy access to all kinds of stuff to do(shopping, non-chain cool restaurants, bars, parks everywhere, great schools, whatever).

But to each their own...

I know, we talk about you people who come to our hood to use our amenities during our community bbq's.

I don't care thou, I only pay $25 a month to my hoa. I've never gotten a HOA fine or letter because I'm not trashy and take care of my house.

Also, I wouldn't be so quick to compare Scottsdale to any where else in the world. I live in Austin the other #1 place to live.

Go ask someone from a Houston suburb what kind of amenities they have easy access to without an HOA.

Basically the best line of thinking you can take.

I live in a neighborhood in an fairly semi-rural setting but not in a planned community, so no HOA.

I get your point about the older neighborhood, but it is really the quality of the schools that pushed us to live so far from the city-center.

Yeah but all the amenities I mentioned.....are from the city of Scottsdale itself. None of them are for specific neighborhoods. They are all perks to those that are Scottsdale residents.

HOAs are run by insecure adults that believe that being an HOA officer is the first time they have ever achieved anything in their life.
The closest I have ever come to being in a fight as an adult was with a goober who was president of the association. He thought that gave him the right to "patrol" the neighborhood slowly stopping in front of houses. After I confronted him he never drove on my street again.

My HOA is fine. I actually wish they would enforce some rules.

I live in a neighborhood with an HOA. The next neighborhood over does not have an HOA. Big difference. While 80% of the people in the next neighborhood keep their houses up just fine, there are a number of houses that don't mow their yard, and/or have let their housed become eyesores.

The houses that aren't maintained bring down the neighborhood. There are houses with plywood over the windows. Houses that use cardboard instead of window blinds, houses that have no grass in the front yard, and others that have not been mowed this year.

Our neighborhood has one and it's great in my opinion. Pays for upkeep of ponds, entrance to neighborhood, common areas and roads. Also maintains a certain amount of class in the neighborhood. you would be surprised as to what some people try to leave out in their yard or driveway. We are currently battling a few people who wish to leave food trucks and large box trailers parked in the driveway all of the time. I just don't think this sort of items should be allowed, I for one would not like it if my neighbor did this I attempted to sell my home. It would look trashy to potential buyers. Also, people attempted to set their satellite dishes in front yard. simple things that some people take offense to, but is really for the betterment of the neighborhood.

Exactly the opposite of the purpose of a HOA.

Again all neighborhood HOA's by law must outline costs and all covenants, codes, and restrictions before selling property. All existing home real estate transactions must disclose and provide this info as well, except buyer beware states.

Two problems:

1) actual enforcement of rules, which tends to be harsh and give the HOA all the leverage and power they choose to use, vary widely.

2) even if you are happy with the rules and its enforcement level, you can have the rules change after the purchase that you personally find intolerable. Only recourse is to incur the expense of moving
