I smoked for a few years. Quit in 2018.
Started feeling odd pings and pongs in my upper chest area. That was concerning to me.

This country was strong when people were clean shaven and smoking.

When I started HS it was an open campus and smoking was allowed everywhere. By the time I graduated 4 years later it was down to 3 outdoor areas and leaving campus was forbidden without official permission. Class of ‘82.
When Dad was at LaTech in the 50’s everyone smoked in class (they carried ashtrays). He used to talk about hating tests in the winter because they had to open the windows during exams due to the smoke and it would be cold outside.
To answer the question, I don’t know any smokers anymore. I smoked from 6 to about 50 but quit over the cost due to taxation and the use of the collections.

No, thankfully. The people who owned our house before us both died of lung cancer. There was a residual smoke smell when we bought it, but we got rid of the carpet & painted the walls, and it was gone. A few weeks later, the first time we ran the air conditioner, black stuff came out, so we had our ducts cleaned. The cleaner showed Dad a picture of what had been in the ducts; there was a layer of old ash in there. Now the only time I smell cigarette smoke is in our bedroom closet; it’s the only room we haven’t painted. It's rare, but it happens.

When I was in the army in the late 80s/early 90s we had a smoking room in the barracks. It was the only place inside where guys could smoke. It was just a regular barracks room with couches and a big fan at the window to pull the smoke outside. Unless we were in the field, in the evening the room would be full of guys smoking. I’d say at that time at least 75% of my unit smoked, including myself.*
They’d make us paint the room every few months. Seems like it was every three months if I remember right. We’d paint it white and you could see just how yellowed the walls had become in only a few months.
* I quit smoking cigarettes about 24 years ago, though I do occasionally enjoy a good cigar, probably one or two every few months.

I was very precocious. I couldn’t even see the counter top and had to hand the $0.27 to the clerk (thought I was buying them for adult in car as was common then probably, it was busy, nobody said anything) I was always way ahead of my age group.

Were your parents smokers? That is the only way I can imagine they did not smell it on you.

I have vivid memories of going over to a buddies house we would always hang at and there was a thick cloud of smoke in the TV room from his parents just chain smoking all night.
Ahh, good times from my past.

My grandmother (born in 1920) smoked from the age of 7 until her late 50s. Her father grew his own tobacco. When she was seven he taught her how to roll and light cigarettes for him. That’s how she got started smoking. I remember her smoking when I was a kid in the mid-70s she’d even send me into the store to get her pack of Pall-Mall Golds. By the time she quit, I think in the late 70s but it may have been early 80s, the damage was done. She had emphysema (now called COPD) and struggled to breath. Her last few years were hell as she got more and more sick. She had to go on oxygen, a ton of meds, and do daily breathing treatments with this little air compressor thing. A lifetime of smoking made her last years of life living hell.

I don’t have an issue with this if you accept that you aren’t going to get subsidized medical care down the line.
We already spend most of our treatment dollars on end of life care. There should be some sort of unwritten rule. You participate in activities that have been shown to cause a 10x chance of cancer, you must pay full price out of pocket for that cancer treatment.

Not anymore, but I grew up in the 50's onward, so almost all my relatives smoked in their houses, cars, bars, restaurants, hospitals, etc.
The only place I never saw them smoke was when they went to church, but they were lighting up as they walked out the doors.
My wife still smokes, but never in the house. However, her car smells like a rolling ashtray and I refuse to ride in it unless it is absolutely necessary, but I don't have to like it.

Ah great memories !!
Smoke a half pack on the way to the rig.
Smoke 1.5 packs at the rig.
Smoke half pack on the way home.
Smoke half pack that evening.
Get up the next morning and did it all again.

The first time I met my mother in law she was staying at her boyfriend's house and they chain smoked in their house. Then they broke up and she had to move in with her mom who didn't allow it, proclaimed she'd rather be homeless than live there, found some other livingston trash boyfriend where she stays now and they smoke in the house.
Did I mention my mother in law is a trashy leftist that genuinely believes she's a witch? Luckily my wife hates her and did everything she could to be the opposite of her mom.
