What is so important to have a self storage for (as an example) over a year?
I get if used for a business. We are talking about your personal stuff.

Because my wife has holiday shite and furniture she can’t use in the house right now.

Theoretically, the idea is to put crap offsite so you have a way to go through everything remaining and put it back in more efficiently.
In practice, it becomes a recurring cost for shite you will never use again.

I don't understand how there are so many of these. We had one one time but it was just for temporary storage. I'd imagine for most people the shite in there isn't worth what they are paying in a year's rental payments.

I had to downsize from a house to an apartment and had extra furniture and tools.
I think I'm about to just sell it all though. I've gone without it for over a year, so clearly I don't need it.

Thank God I didn't marry a hoarder.

Uh yeah, 10 years ago I paid like $30/month for one for a few months.
Now I'm paying over $100/month.

I had one for a couple of years after I got married. Our first house was pretty small, and between her stuff and my stuff, plus the furniture my sister gave us when she moved, there wasn't room for it all.
When we bought our house, we cleared out the storage unit, kept what we wanted, and had a garage sale for the rest.

I have my deceased mil furniture in my house, my wife (no pics) wants to keep it. Maybe I need one.

I have had one for several years. It has a lot of furniture and things from my parents' house I moved there after my mom died. I just can't bring myself to get rid of it and we just don't have a place for it. It is silly from a financial POV but I just continue to not confront the issue of getting rid of it.

We use to have one then did simple math and realized the amount to keep the items in storage was significantly greater than its value so it was a great exercise in downsizing.

We have stuff from our last move in there because it was non-simultaneous purchase of new and sale of old.
Problem is that a lot of what ended up in there has been replaced by more like it or has aged out, yet we haven’t been in a position to donate or trash most of it.
Does NOT help that we keep getting shite unsolicited from relatives when they move. Ended up with a lot of FIL’s shite when he got divorced and had to move into a much smaller home.

For Christmas decor.
We’re the Griswold's so they’re a ton of it.
Our attic is above the second floor so no more carrying it all up and down three levels dozens of times. I make a haul in my truck and it’s done.

We sold our first house quicker than we thought we would and our new one wasn't close to being ready. Had to rent one for about 5 months to put all our stuff in until we could move in.

When someone buys or rents a container, in theory it's because they want access to more storage space. But it never works out that way. In reality, they just accumulate more shite.

That seems worse than putting it in attic
