re: Do you have an addictive personality?

I grew up with the knowledge that my maternal grandfather was a functional alcoholic and it was about the time the media began to talk about addictive personality and the tendency to run in families.
As a result I was always conscious that I might have a proclivity for problems if not diligent. So although I did a LOT of partying in my teens and 20’s I made sure that my use of actually addictive stuff was very sporadic, never even 2 days in a row including alcohol.
Have always been able to walk away from substances, sometimes for years or apparently the rest of my life. So I fortunately have NOT got an addictive personality.

Generally no, but I do like sex, and I have to have it fairly regularly. I drink a cup and a half of coffee every morning, too. Other than those, no.

Yes and I also have compulsive tendencies a great combination to be able to practice self control at all times with.

I can get obsessed with things but it soon wears out and I go on to the next great thing.

Yes, I smoked for years and just the thought of a cigarette can trigger the urge. I know people that have quit but can have one every now and then. I cannot, total abstinence is the only way I can keep the cravings at bay. I like bourbon and wish I could have a cigar with a pour but I know better. Alcohol
however doesn't have the same hold on me. I can drink or not drink, no issue. I have gambled in the past but recognized that I enjoyed it a little too much so I steer clear of it.

I’ve heard of people who can “recreationally” smoke for example and then not touch a nicotine stick for weeks after.
Everyone who becomes addicted to nicotine says this. Same with weed.
“Ohh I can stop smoking nicotine/weed whenever I want.” Well then why don’t you?

I don’t know that I’d say I have an addictive personality - but it’s very easy for me to spend way too much time working. Picking up extra shifts at the hospital or taking on a greater patient load in my other job.
I have to be intentional to actually take time off so that I have some what of a healthy work life balance.

I get really lost in things that require strategy, whether that's at work or in hobbies. I can play historical strategy games like total war for hours at a time, but I don't get to the point where I have to do that every single day or even once a week.
I use nicotine pouches strategically when I need a boost. I've done all kinds of tobacco and nicotine products (other than smoking) since I was in high school, but never actually been addicted. I can make a can of dip or Zyn last months.

Working out, sex, alcohol (drink at least 3 nights a week) energy drinks.

Cigarettes and alcohol. I've tried to quit numerous times. When I stop smoking, I stop drinking.

my Dr put me on Wellbutrin, it was like a freaking miracle. All my addictive tendencies went away - I stopped drinking, and have nearly stopped dipping.
Now you’re just addicted to Wellbutrin.

This has been me. I have developed bad “addictions” in the past with nicotine, sex and gambling. I have kicked those habits but in the back of my mind, I know i could slip very easily if I don’t satisfy my dopamine urge with constructive and/or harmless hobbies.
The good thing about that is that I get the same satisfaction from woodworking or the like as I did when I was risking 1000’s of dollars in gambling.
I guess a strong willpower can help too to resist the “bad” urge.

100% whether it’s drugs, drinking, sex, video games, etc.. I will go full tilt until something breaks. Unfortunately for me, I never know when it breaks until someone else tells me. I battle addiction everyday of my life. I’m currently in recovery and have to be very careful not to pick up new ones.

No. However I found myself watching TickTock way too much so I deleted the app as it became a waste of time. I think Social Media is a huge addiction problem currently and only getting worse.

It feels like 90% of the population is addicted to smartphones and the endorphin rush from constantly checking them.

Not really. I used to think I did until I met people who truly are.
We have a friend who 100% does, but it’s not just with “bad” things. Picked up billiards randomly, now plays every single day and doesn’t go out to regular bars much at all anymore. Picked up yoga, decided to become advanced level enough to teach if they wanted. Decided to go without drinking for a stint, put it down like it was never a thing. Etc.
Almost like a hyper fixation on anything they set their mind to. It’s honestly pretty impressive.
