I pay money to a card for my 16 year old. Probably $150 a month. He used his own money from grass cutting but that's gone until spring. He wants a job at Ace Hardware but with workouts and football, he really doesn't have time. The fact that he wants to work is a win in my book

I pay my kids double their age in allowance if they actually complete tasks. Min wage in Fl is like $14/ hr now. So that’s like 2 fricking hours of work….
Yes I pay them, for them doing work, and I also don’t pay for stupid shite like 7 brew on the way to school and make them pay.
(Now my damn wife is a different story and a routine family discussion that I’ve never won)

I was mowing grass at 10.
I know a couple like this. 2 boys both in high school. They have a lawn service. Postage stamp lawn.

We give our college daughter $350/mo, her grandmother gives her $100, and that's for gas, groceries, and a social life, lol.

Yeah, that plays part for us as well. I know our daughter would work more if she had more time but we require that she play a sport in high school.
We gave her the opportunity to pick the sport, but being part of a team, learning how to win and lose, take coaching, etc. was mandatory for us

That's up to you to decide you're the parent. Depending on the labor dictates what I give them and how much I pay.
Son does some yard work, takes out the trash, and helps drive his sisters. In exchange he gets an old truck, gas, insurance and maintenance. He also had a job this summer to cover his other expenses which is basically fast food and video games.
The girls on the other hand do way less and get way less.

We do allowance = age. That seems low and I'm gonna consider doubling it but they don't spend what they get. At least my son doesnt. His younger sister buys junk like and makeup she doesnt need. I find myself doing the yard myself more often than not during school year but I'm semi retired and have more time my hands than they do. Between activities, school work and afternoon FL weather it often makes more sense for me to cut it on a weekday.
We pay for their meals out still even if theyre out w friends. Once they're driving solo, that will change and we will need to increase their allowance for gas and insurance. I need to consider a higher weekly rate that allows them to budget their own gas/insurance/cell at that point.
I also pay them for report cards. With a bonus for straight A's. Most of that they invest.
Son just started first job as a referee on weekends. I am matching his Roth contributions 2 for 1.

I can’t wait to send this thread to my kids so they can see how good they have it
No allowance but both have credit cards on our account and we monitor spending. 17 year old works construction during the summer and saves all his money. He’s in depression this week because he’s highly invested in tech stocks

It’s not $30/week more about $12-15 but can fluctuate. They understand that I pay for the car/insurance/college so they don’t bitch at all about it.
They have chores around the house to do but I don’t make any of my kids work. I figure they’re going to work damn near every day for the next 30-40 years so they should enjoy being a kid/teenager. If they want to work I let them, but I’m not demanding them to get a job.

They don't get a set amount per week. I generally buy their tickets to football games and give them concession money or money for food after the game, but not for Starbucks, 7Brew, Dutch Bros, etc. They worked over the summer to have spending money through the year, and will pick up odd jobs like dog sitting.
Daughter wanted to go to NY this year with school, so she saved half the price of the trip and we're covering the other half.
I don't think $100/month is too much, but I do think $100/week is excessive.

My 17 year old son burns thru as much as you give him. I try to limit it to 40 a week. If something comes up, he asks and I give him a yes or no if he needs more. That usually is answered by me walking thru his room and bathroom to see if everything is in order.

My kids each have a credit card and authorized to spend $100/month. If they don’t use it they lose it, it doesn’t carry over.
I feel it’s helping them build credit and be more responsible. They seem to pay a little more attention to what things cost.
It’s also good in an emergency (or convenience for me) as I can increase the limit whenever.

Girls are probably handled different than boys. I got about $10/week in exchange for mowing the lawn, taking the garbage out, doing laundry, etc.

I never had an allowance my entire life. Got a job at 16 and that was my money.
In fairness, my parents helped me in other ways into my 30s.

My 16 year old puts any money she receives into her Apple Pay. I give her a few hundred bucks for Christmas and her birthday. She spends it how she wants. Right now she has a couple thousand saved up from various birthdays, grandparents, etc. because she is cheap like me. Most of what she spends is on high school events and when we go on vacation.

No, that's what jobs are for.
They all had credit cards to use for food, gas, and incidentals but I made sure they were reasonable.

Our approach was anything you want over $120/month you have to work for but we would give enough to have a social life but that doens't mean Canes or Chic-Fil-A three times a week with daily stops at Target or Starbucks.
