re: Do you ever stop to think about what we’re actually looking at when we look at the stars?

This really doesn’t seem that big, the observable universe.
Consider: there are 1 to 3 trillion planets in the Milky Way. So each speck of sand next to you in that space holds up to 3 trillion potential earths
And of course, observable* meaning there are more but we don’t know how many

I think I'm looking at suns.
Yeah! Since all the emphasis on Aliens lately, I was thinking of the stars we see. The vas majority that we see are "Suns" with the possibility of their own planets revolving around them.
Mind boggling!

Just remember this, my girl,
When you look up in the sky
You can see the stars and still not see the light.

Just how beautiful a clear night with a starry sky is. Reminds me of the vast universe and His creation.

And there are an estimated 2 trillion other galaxies in the observable universe with some schmuck alien complaining they can’t see us either.
Thats a faulty assumption that fails to consider life is impossible.
The whole "even if life is one in a trilliion, there are 2 trillion other galaxies" argument pre-supposes that there is some countable "chance" of life, simply because we exist.
If you fail to allow for the possibility of impossible things to exist (miracles) you will have a bad equation, given that they do.

I asked a guy about this the other day. He said that the only thing he sees when he looks up is the Starfish Constellation

Everything, visit my son's house. Tons of stars. I can get lost just looking at them.
At my house Mandeville not so much. To many lights

I have an app that tells me exactly what I am looking at.

again. presupposition. maybe...but a presupposition nonetheless

There are people that are curious, and those that aren't. I like looking at a star, and going, nope, that's Venus or Mars. Most people, of all ages, are just worried about when their DoorDash is showing up. TikTok awaits.

Most of the time, when I see them, I don't really think about them, but if I am in my backyard at night, with the dogs, I will just stare at the sky and think "what is all of this?". Stars, the moon, our solar system... and beyond.. How big is whatever this is apart of.. I look at it like the human body. Is our universe the left arm of something? And where did this all come from or was it always just here?

The expanse of the universe is almost inconceivable.
It’s kind of depressing that we will never be able to observe much less visit and explore any of it outside our solar system.
