It's really about the speed you can travel and distance you have to travel. For every 10 mph faster you can go, you'll save about a minute over 10 miles. It's just sometimes you have to drive aggressively to maintain that 10 mph faster speed. If you're only going a couple exits down/a couple miles...then there's no point unless 20 seconds is going to make a difference for you. Hell, how often does one minute, or even five make a difference...

If you're going 80 vs 70 mph for 50 miles, or 90 vs 70 mph for 25 miles...either of those only gain you 5 minutes.

This morning on causeway.

Rolling convoy, I was about 15 cars back from the cop guiding the convoy. He drives straddling the lane regulating the speed.

People are switching lanes the entire time. They didn't seem to realize that there was no way to make up time, the cop was the front of the line. So I had to ride with a foot on the brake the entire time instead of having the easiest drive ever.

Times like this make you realize how stupid people can be.

Wondered that, just never heard someone refer to their engineering degree as associated letter, then E, before.

I have an FE, or I've even heard EIT... In Louisiana you don't have to wait 4 years to take the PE, you can take it early and once your 4 years experience is up...just file paperwork and get official stamp.

The last couple of months I've been staying out of the left hand lane. Prior to that, I would keep pace with whatever speed the left lane was going. Moving to the middle or right lane has lowered the anxiety of driving significantly. I noticed that you're constantly either on the gas or on the brake in the left lane. Not much in between. Things are a few mph slower in the other lanes, but not quite as frantic.

As for making time up, it's all around red lights. If you catch an earlier cycle by making it a minute earlier, your making time up while speeding and by not sitting at the red light. But that's all circumstantial and probably not a significant amount of time in the grand scheme of things.

It kind of does depending on the situation. Some lights are pretty standard and don't take long to cycle through. Other lights are timed such that you could end up sitting at a red light for quite a while. Additionally, if you are too far back in the line, you might have to endure 2 or more cycles of the light before you can go through. If you get there a little bit faster, it might make a big difference in how long you have to wait.

That said, I always get a big kick out of the idiots who weave in and out of traffic only to get stuck in the adjacent lane while I cruise on past them.

Correct. It's amazing how much gas people waste by not getting places faster. And how many anacondas don't want none.

If you're going 40 miles:

Going 70 MPH (most speed limits) you'll get there in .85 minutes per mile or 34 minutes.

If you 85 MPH (most common speeding speed) you'll get there in .7 minutes per mile, or 28 minutes.

So you'll only save 7 minutes if you cruise at 85 the entire time for 40 miles. Which most people don't do and doesn't apply to most situations. And also why i said the time savaings is not significant until the distance is greater than most people drive daily.

The OP and most conversations on this topic surround traffic and weaving and speeding dangerously around people.

But if you want to discuss speeding on the interstate in a city setting:

If you're going from Downtown to the Airport (which will encompass any distance from nola to kenner which is most people's commutes, that's only 17 miles via i-10.

So going 60MPH you'd get there in 17 minutes.

So at 70 MPH the entire time you'd get there in 14.5 minutes.

Going 85 the whole time you'd get there in 11.9 minutes

SO if you somehow managed to go 85 miles per hour the entire ride from downtown through kenner to the airport without slowing down youd only save 5 minutes.

EIT in Texas and I wish I could take it now. It's not a requirement in most EE industries except Power, but it's a goal of mine to have.


Anyways. Can we all agree to just yell at people going 70 in the passing lane?
