Depends. I was on the fence about passing someone doing 10 under on a two lane road, decided not to be a dick about it and figured I wouldn't lose much time over it.

Ends up I barely missed a light, a school bus turned out into my lane a fee seconds before my light hit green, had to wait through a few stops... Eventually the bus turned into a subdivision and not even a mile down I get stopped in the middle of the road while an 18 wheeler tries to back into a business on that same two lane hwy.

I know I had to have lost 10 minutes in a 2-3 mile stretch.

Sometimes you just hit everything wrong. First world problems lol...

Its always a balance of time over MPG. Going faster increases drag and reduces MPG. More importantly, the biggest factor is engine rotational speed. RPM. If you are going 60 in 5th gear at 2500 RPM and going 70 upshifts you into 6th gear and 1500 RPM then youll save gas by going 70 vs. 60.

So to say "faster = >MPG" is an incomplete or misleading statement. Every vehicle has a sweet spot based on drag, speed, gearing and RPM.
