re: Do you care if your chicken was humanely raised?

Are you referring to chicken farmers contracted with Tyson? Also, it sounds as though you're referring to those that make the most money, not the average.
Most of these farmers are over collateralized to the teeth. And you can't make a blanket statement about what these farmers make, as they are set up on a tournament style payment. The top 4 chicken companies set this up like a competition and if you're not on top, you're undoubtedly living in poverty and in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to a giant company.
No doubt. Chicken farmers get royally fricked over by the big poultry companies.
The big companies sell them the chicks at a premium price, then sell them the feed to raise them, also at a premium price, then pay them based on weight and quality in comparison to other farmers, with many barely breaking even, if that. Also, since there are so few major companies, they can easily dictate prices through "benchmarking", which is a fancy word for collusion. I heard a few years ago that a bunch of chicken farmers got together and sued the major companies under anti-trust laws with this collusion as the primary basis for the claim, but I have no idea if they got anywhere with the suit. Most likely not, since the companies have tons of money and the farmers have very little.

Gigantic yes. Even if you're only interested in eating eggs, it's a big difference all around.
Don't be fooled by the "free range" phrase, because it's sickeningly misleading.
Chickens that truly lived outside aren't available everywhere, but it's worth the trouble.

Oh yes. Compare a "Free range vegetarian grain fed" egg to just a true free range egg...The true free range egg is much harder and darker and nutrient rich. Chickens aren't vegetarians, they eat everything, bugs, scrapes. So keeping them moving on a farm is a must.
I love farm raised chickens.

That is exactly what I've read. I've been told ITT that all of that is wrong by a chicken farmer, and basically some people just aren't cut out for it. Which is fine and I won't pretend every doc is unbiased.
I just read in an article, from 2006 mind you, that over 60% of chicken farmers in south Arkansas live under the poverty line.
I'd really like to hear something from the other side. I may man up and ask my cousins about it, as they are definitely poor as frick.

The ones I'm familiar with provide the birds and the feed. They pay the grower on pounds of meat, feed conversion, and livability.

If that truly is an issue for anyone, they should just switch to being a vegetarian

Folks who care how their chicken meals are being raised are a little like chickens running around with their heads cut off...

Hell no, those frickers are sneaky.
We had two bastards when I was a teen living in the country. We had bought about 40 solid white hatchlings to raise for egg laying and meat. Then I see two of the same with colors like these in the batch
When they got older they sure developed a hellish attitude.

Nope.
Scruffy cares that it is tasty.

Being humanely raised is less important to me than the amount of growth hormones and ENORMOUS overuse of antibiotics. I don't really care about the life conditions of the chicken or anything else so long as these conditions do not adversely affect the health (and taste) of said animals.
