You should support your kids, not your ex

Without deep diving into context, yes I agree. A lot of women are rewarded for simply ending a relationship. Good or bad.

I think far too many fathers are denied custody of their children when couples divorce. The presumption that the mother is the best parent is just wrong.

agree that there should be a system of checks and balances to assure that child support goes to the actual financial needs of the children because that rarely seems to be the reality

The judge determines that it is one and the same though.

In a divorce between two sane, non-violent people, if a woman goes into a courtroom and says that she can't support kids without his money, maybe she shouldn't be the one with the kids. Just a thought.

With today's laws, she already has the upper hand.

We need to make divorce shameful again. #hottake

CS Reform is much needed.

Luckily, I've never had to deal with a divorce, but I do know a person who had 6 months remaining on his child support and his ex brought him back to court to bleed just a little bit more out of him. That's the short version of the story.

Child support is to support children. Whether it is "absent fathers" or "failed relationships" isn't necessarily the right question to ask nor are those two things necessarily mutually exclusive.

So no I do not agree with what is written on that shirt.

I imagine the shirt is trying to provide commentary on how child support laws (and divorce proceedings in general) are often abused and men get a raw deal, but the shirt does a poor job of communicating that. There are certainly times when child support is in fact appropriate in "failed relationships" even if there isn't an "absent father."

Child support should pay for the child's expenses depending on their age and activities.

For example, I divorced my ex husband. We both pay for child care and school.

Its 50/50. We both make the same amount of money and its all going towards the children.

I do feel differently if the mother is a stay at home mom in an abusive relationship that she can't get out of though.

I'm split on the issue.

While there are tons of women who have kids just for the checks, there are some who legitimately need the support otherwise she and the child will be living in poverty, absent father or not.

Then you have the fathers who want custody just so they don't have to pay, or pay as much, child support. That's a different issue though.

What does spousal abuse have anything to do with child support?

Alimony =\= child support.

A lot of women of abusive relationships stay in them because they can't afford their lives without their spouse.

ETA: I didn't read your question correctly.

I guess what I was trying to say is, I understand why a stay at home mom would need child support to help support her new life. She doesn't have a job (Maybe hasn't had one in years) , needs to pay for daycare, rent etc.

I think there are all different situations. I make the same amount as my children's father. There's no reason why it shouldn't be split 50/50. I pay for my things, he pays for his and we both have 50/50 custody. They are with me the same amount of time they are with their father.

However, not all situations are like this. But I do agree, child support should 100% go to the children.

Should there be a time limit to how long the ex should fund her lifestyle?

I mean if they divorce when the kid is 5 and the mom was a sahm, should the ex pay support for the next 13 years while the wife works no or a minimal job? Is there an expectation in the system where the husband's payments decrease in a adequate time for her to get a job?

I'm genuinely asking as I'm fairly ignorant on the topic but have plenty of opinions.

Speaking of child support...

Didn't Kevin Federline just get awarded 20K a month from Britney for child support..?
