Define "abusive". I know women who throw around the term "emotionally abusive " like crazy. That's what many women call it when a man questions their behavior.

Your ole lady gonna clean yo arse out like a twink's colon on a weekend trip to Decadence Fest.

Or they marry an a-hole and a few years later -- shocking -- he is still an a-hole.
For the most part, people don't really change.

Exactly. If you are split 50/50 custody you would have to have significantly different incomes to have that number.

Getting physically abused.

No. A present father still has an obligation to financially provide for the well being if his children.

agree that there should be a system of checks and balances to assure that child support goes to the actual financial needs of the children because that rarely seems to be the reality
Personally I've never been divorced and if I was my (ex) wife would certainly see to it that our daughter was cared for and still spoiled.
But I've heard about situations like that quoted above for years. A lot has to do with what one marries.
I've dated girls that any man would've been stupid to marry. You know the type, good to hump but not much else.

i would take the kid on a long summer vacation to Belize.
if the mom were to do that, everyone would think "how brave, she's doing everything to protect her children from that ogre," or some such nonsense, if the dad does it you can bet your arse the they would come track your arse down anywhere in the world and bring you back to face kidnapping charges, and there is precedent

child support should be forced to be in some sort of trust so that the other parent can't just spend the money on themselves.

it absolutely should and it would not be that much of a logistical issue, businesses operate with escrow type of funding account agreements on the reg

That seems easy to control.
Who decides how much gets spent on the child?

Who sets the amount? The court? They already do that.

not talking about the amount, just an accounting of how it's spent, to make sure it is spent on the kids or on behalf of the kids

I am 100% for equal time. My children LOVE their time with their father. And I would never deny my children of that because I'm pissed off at their dad. Sadly I see this so much and its ridiculous. My ex WANTS to be a part of his children's lives. And I'm so grateful for that.
I'm obviously hoping to never get a divorce, but if something were to happen, I would want 50/50 custody. Like you said, it's unfair to the children to not let them have time with a father who wants to be in their life.
Each party pays their own bills, costs for the child are divided 50/50.
Obviously this would not work in every case, and the parents would need to get along and co-parent well. If one party makes significantly more than the other person its not fair to be like, "little Timmy wants to go to $20,000 space camp this summer, I'll need you to give me $10,000 by next week."

I have two tales of child support.
The first, mine. Wife had an affair, got caught, admitted to it. Asked our two sons (14/17) to leave the house with her. They refused. She moved out west and got a job. She was paying me $482 a month in child support for both boys. A month ago (after the boyfriends divorce was final), she moved back. He bought her a new BMW, put her up in a nice West Columbia apartment and she doesn't have a job. My child support went from $482 to $305 because she won't get a job.
A girl I know had a one night stand years ago and got pregnant. Dude didn't want to have anything to do with the baby and she was forced to raise her son alone. It took her years to track down the loser and then several more years to get the courts to make him pay child support.
In my case, I don't need her money to support our two sons who are at home. However, we have a daughter who is in college that I'm presently paying tuition and other expenses on. That $302 a month comes in handy. Besides, the bitch cheated on me so I'm gonna stick her arse for every penny I can, for as long as I can.
At the end of the day child support isn't about anything other than your financial responsibility to your children. At least that's all it should be about.

So the parent recieving needs to save receipts or justify how much gas is used? Get real.
It is an imperfect system, but the situation arises from two selfish people.

Won't happen. They base it on income. For example in my case I pay 70% of all co pays, even though the kids are covered on my insurance. Any outstanding debt leftover from the marriage....again, I pay 70% of it.
Even if the spouse doesn't have a job, they will base their share on minimum wage.

Child support laws are fricked up.
Blake Griffin's ex is getting $200k a month. She should get what it takes to raise however many children they had. Outside of that she needs to get a damn job like everyone else.

you didn't have to hire some "expert" to determine what the deadbeat could earn if she'd get off her lazy arse and get a job?
