If you've hitchhiked before, you probably have seen many winters in your life.
Was pretty common in the 60's and started dwindling in the late 70's. I'd say it was pretty non-existent by the 80's.
You meet some pretty interesting folks by hitchhiking, to say the least.
With all the weirdos out there wouldn't want to hitchhike to get a ride or wouldn't want to pick up a hitchhiker.

I have never actually hitchhiked but about 15 years ago I ran out of gas on the interstate and was walking to the next exit. A trucker that was bobtailing stopped and gave me a ride to the exit waited for me to buy a can and gas and drove me back and dropped me off across from my car

Does your car not have a fuel gauge?

We used to pull on the shoulder ahead of the hitch hiker and when they got to the car, floor it and leave them standing there.

There's a couple people in my lil town that hitchhike. One normally just walks all the time, a couple days ago I seen him with his thumb out. If they walking to/from work I'll pick them up from time to time.

I caught a ride one time, when I lost my car in Anchorage. Some guy gave me a ride to Palmer 40 miles away.

By some stroke of bad luck, turned out to be a guy who worked with my GF's (at the time) dad. Rumors spread like crazy. Out of nearly 400,000 people, ended up with someone like that.

As a young teenager I did hitchhike between the River parishes. I liked a girl about 15 miles up River, rode my bicycle sometimes, and hitchhiked the other times. It was safe back in the 60s.

My MIL (no pics) grew up in Los Angeles in the 50’s and picked up a Marine hitchhiking back to San Diego. They are still married.
She also hopped freight trains.

It's not uncommon to see hitchhikers here at interstate exits with the large transient population we have on the Coast.

All of this was popular until the latter part of the 70s. I remember my parents picking up hitchhikers fairly often when we would go on trips.

I knew a dude at NLU(early 80’s) that was from Shreveport and didn’t have a car. Anytime he wanted to go home, he would make his way to I-20, take off his prosthetic leg (from the knee down) and thumb his way home. Said he never had to wait long for a ride.

Hitched a ton hiking. Trail areas are easy if you have a pack and that hiker look. Twin lakes to dever faster than a shuttle.

Never hitchhiked but I’ve broken down on the I-10 and for some reason people would stop and ask if I needed a ride or help. I’m just a regular dude so I don’t know why anyone was so eager to help. Seemed suspicious.

The hitchhikers you see nowadays are basically just bums. They aren’t really traveling to a destination.
