Have you here hitchhiked or picked up a hitchhiker?

Haven’t seen anyone with a thumb out in years. I do remember seeing bumbs with signs at intersections but they are looking for money more than anything.

I have never actually hitchhiked but about 15 years ago I ran out of gas on the interstate and was walking to the next exit. A trucker that was bobtailing stopped and gave me a ride to the exit waited for me to buy a can and gas and drove me back and dropped me off across from my car.

CSB here.

Driving out of Hobby Airport last night there was a bum by the interstate walking around holding up a styrofoam top lid from a to go container like a sign.

There was nothing written on it but he was walking back and forth. Holding it up to his chest and pointing at it.

He must have been higher than heaven.

I've seen a thumb thrown up a few times over the last ten years... but it's rare.

Definitely not a norm anymore... to many killed in that situation I assume.

Back in the day my friend loved to pick them up and mess with 'em. They were always trying to get to New Orleans (seriously). He would just say weird uncomfortable things until they asked to be let out. Oh and quite a few couples (guy/girl) coming from the midwest or up north.

4 months ago a hispanic guy at the local gas station asked me for a jack and a ride back to his car. Had a flat. This was 10PM at night.

The way he was situated on the interstate, I would have to back track 5 miles to the exit to turn around to drop him off.

I told him I would but first he had to empty his pockets, lift his shirt and show me his pants legs.

I also told him if he tried anything, I'd blow his head off with this 9mm I had in my truck. I didn't actually have a gun.

The guy actually complied Drove him back and let him keep the jack.

When I told my wife later she was pissed for days I did that.

Gave one a ride earlier, just across the parish line, in the backseat of my police car.

I e seen people looking for rides. They don't stick a thumb out anymore but they just look at you and I guess if you are open to picking people up you know the look. Not for me but I guess somebody is picking them up

Used to do it all the time while backcountry skiing. Park at top of pass, hike to whatever we wanted to ski, hit the highway lower down and thumb it back to the top.

Thumbed all over the USA back in the late 60s/early 70s.

Got picked up by nice folks and some real creepers.

Never. A bunch of trimmigrants pop up on the northbound exits every fall in Northern CA trying to hitchhike to the emerald triangle, but outside of weed season I rarely see hitchhikers.

I picked up a couple hitchhiking last summer, their car broke down out the road and I gave them a drive back to their place. Maybe 30 minute drive.
