Used to do it all the time while backcountry skiing. Park at top of pass, hike to whatever we wanted to ski, hit the highway lower down and thumb it back to the top.
When I lived in Tahoe it was pretty common to pick people up on way to resort. Lots of kids without cars headed to work. I thumbed to Sacramento once. Dude who picked me up stopped to do a drug deal I’m pretty sure.

My mom got her face smashed by a guy she picked up in the 70's.
I got in a wreck on the interstate when I was 17 and a stranger gave my friend and I a ride to the next exit (dumb, but I didn't have a cell phone in circa 1998)
Mom & I got a flat outside of Kentwood on I-55. Got a ride with a guy back to Camp Moore, where my Dad was doing some restoration work. Dad was pissed we rode with a strange male.

I was in a small beach town in South Africa a few years ago, called Hermanus. Everyone around there hitch hikes to get around. We got strange “wtf” looks whenever we passed someone with their thumbs up and didn’t pick em up.

I hitch hiked the west coast. Met some really cool people. I think it was a little more common in the west . That was in the early nineties. Attitudes have changed now. People are strung tight. Doubt I would do it now.

This is kind of fricked up, but I remember back in the day... Late 90s.. When we would go out, if we saw a hitchhiker we would pull over just far enough they ended up doing a slight jog to get to us and then when they got close we would take off. We did this maybe 5 or 6 times and I still remember this, all but one flipped us off. We were idiots and we thought that was hilarious.. But god damn we did some stupid shite..

The hitchhikers you see nowadays are basically just bums. They aren’t really traveling to a destination.
And you know this how?

Have you here hitchhiked or picked up a hitchhiker?
Yes on both counts. Hitchhiking was how I got around in 1977. Before I got my license. No way in hell I would do either these days unless I knew that person
