There are much worse things than trying to get your kid what they want for Christmas.

I think as a kid I made a toy list with a star ranking next to each toy.

Four stars meant I really really wanted that toy. One star meant I would like it...but not at the expense of the four star. I had shite figured out

Of course not. In all my Christmases as a kid, I remember getting two things I wanted, ever--an Atari 2600 and an NES. Other than that, I got whatever was in stock at Service Merchandise. That didn't stop me from cutting out pictures from the Sears catalog every year of shite I wanted.

Somehow, I lived and still managed to enjoy Christmas.

I told my 6 year old you are only allowed to ask Santa for 1 thing when you see him. She can make a list of several items but Santa picks and chooses what he thinks is best for her.

For about 3 or 4 Christmas' in a row I asked for the GI Joe Aircraft Carrier. The last few Christmas' I asked for it, that was the only thing I asked for.. Thinking if it was the only thing I asked for.. I would get it.. But I remember my parents told me Santa doesn't pay that much for one toy..

Santa did the same thing for me with that Aircraft Carrier.

One of my friends got one and it was huge and the novelty of it wore off we would only play with it ever now and again. We used it for a base more than anything else.

I just don't want him looking like a poser when some scrappy kid from NOLA punks his arse in a $30 pair.

My kid has a new cow on her list. Unless it falls out of the back end of one we already have, it ain't happening.

how do you tell a 6 yr old they aren't getting a toy they want?

"Santa thought you'd like these presents better" or "The store ran out of them"

quote:

She didn't like that answer and left the breakroom

Then she's too stupid to save. Let her spend an obscene amount of money on a glorified stuffed animal. Then when you hear her complain about being broke after Christmas, tell her that you made a whole bunch of money this Christmas buying Hatchimals and reselling them to a bunch of idiots who were afraid of disappointing their kids for double what you originally paid

You should've asked for the GI Joe Hovercraft as a compromise. Depth charges ftw.

Is it really necessary for kids to get every single toy they ask for?

Nope. In retrospect, I got some far cooler shite that my parents came up with not on my list when I didn't get something absolutely absurd that I asked for.

What gets me about the Hatchimal craze is it's not even that great of a toy. My Teddy Ruxpin was more useful.

That's the point I was trying to make to her. Waiting in line for a toy isn't that big of a deal. My parents did it for my sister for a Cabbage Patch kid, but she actually played with it for a few years. Every single parent I know says that once that Hatchimal hatches, the kid lost complete interest. It only takes like 30 minutes to hatch too.
Way cooler toys for $50 that will give more than 30mins of enjoyment, but I am in DFW and the parents here seem way more concerned with "keeping up with the Jones'"

3 toys, just like the gifts of the 3 wisemen. My gf and I have talked more and more about this. We are in agreement not to do Santa, and just focus on the Christian aspect (while still maintaining the Christmas spirit)

I understand this goes on a lot, but sometimes it is simply about getting your kid something they want. There are people who enjoy providing for their kids, and Christmas offers another opportunity to do just that. If they're not neglecting their kid while trying to buy a Hatchimal, I don't see the issue. If your kid demands that she receives a Hatchimal, then you've got a problem, but simply getting your kid a gift that they want isn't the end of the world.
