Do Kids Really Need Everything On Their Christmas List?

A co-worker is freaking out trying to buy her 6 yr old this stupid Hatchimal. She's already waited in line at 5am at Target in 15° weather and wasn't able to get one. She's now looking on Craigslist and is willing to pay more than double MSRP.
In an effort to help her I told her that I know of 4 kids who have gotten these Hatchimals(2 are my own nieces) and after it hatched, they really wanted nothing to do with it. My sister-in-law says it was a waste of money for a few hours of interest.
I told my coworker this and she looked at me like I was the biggest a-hole and said how do you tell a 6 yr old they aren't getting a toy they want?
I told her that when I was 6, I didn't get every single toy I asked for from Santa. On Christmas Day it didn't matter b/c I had a ton of other toys and I didn't even notice.
She didn't like that answer and left the breakroom. Is it really necessary for kids to get every single toy they ask for? When do parents use some common sense and say hey, this toy is complete crap for $50. Little Johnny will just have to get over it.

But we have a lot of shitty parents these days creating spoiled little shitheads. Instagram and Pinterest have been helping making things worse as well. Instead of really being there for your kid on special events, moms want to one up each other with whatever cute nonsense they find on these sites.

the Hatchimal is probably the dumbest of all the toys that have been "must haves" for kids.
It really sucks and it's not fun at all. It just hatches and you get a second rate furby. Hell the new furbys are so much cooler.

My 10 yr old hardly asked for anything. Of course he'd like $200 soccer cleats, but that isn't happening simply out of principle. An RC truck is his big gift that he wants.

We never set crazy expectations with the gifts from Santa. 2-3 toys tops. Then we get them something that is nice and will last from us. With grandparents, aunts and uncles, Santa gifts, and what we buy them, they have way more than enough and it just accumulates and you end up tossing it or donating it later on. Last year my oldest wanted a microphone. Not sure why, but we found one on Amazon for under $15 so we bought it for her. She also wanted some robotic dog. Neither were played with that much, and I see stuff like these Hatchimals as the same thing. If you can get one cheap then do it, but don't go crazy.

been the opposite for me. we get like 3 'big' gifts for each kid and call it a day. nobody is after the 'hot' gifts this year and they get enough other crap from relatives that 3 gifts is plenty.

No. If anything, Christmas should be a time to teach kids to appreciate whatever they receive, however; it seems like many parents don't want their kids to not have what all the other kids have so its one big competition over trivial bullshite.
Its good for retail, but nothing good comes from giving a kid whatever they want.. Then they begin to start expecting to get whatever they want and well.. Do you really want a kid to be that way?
