Live in a 2 story house with all bedrooms upstairs and a completely open concept downstairs. Our 5 year old plays on whatever floor we are on, which is normally the downstairs. It sucks not having a playroom downstairs, but per my wife we had to have an open concept.

The church used to say your order of priority should be 1) God, 2) Spouse, and 3) Kids. The couples I knew who are still together followed that. If you are an atheist, i guess you skip directly to number 2. Kids do better when their parents are still together and a functional couple. To me there isn’t anything inherently wrong with letting your kids play wherever, but if it’s a symptom that they have taken over your house and your life, your marriage could be in trouble.

I sort of made a post about this the other day.
I'm a younger millennial and I (or we when other kids were in the mix) always played outside, in the basement, or a bedroom. Especially if it was some sort of party, holiday, or family gathering.
These days, at least in my experience, kids are running around and screaming in the house, in the same area as all the adults. Toys everywhere. That would not fly back in the day.

is it more to do with open concept houses?
we live in a 100 year old house, my kids have their rooms (which don't really have toys), their playroom (most of the toys), and the back den (some toys/hang out area)
the living room is basically off limits to the kids and is where me and my wife hang out and sit (no TV, just fireplace)
the playroom is only accessible through my kids room (old sunroom porch turned into room), so that is where all of their toys are because they can pretty much trash it and no one will ever see it

It doesn't seem like kids go play together outside anymore. In my childhood, we used to go play pickup basketball and football all of the time. We were outside and active so often.
I don't see that among a lot of kids nowadays.

where i grew up, almost every house had an at least semi-finished basement, usually with a ping pong table, tv w/ video games, etc. so that's where the kids would hang out if they weren't outside.
eta: open concept houses suck

My 3yo will typically play in the basement where we have most of her toys. If she's doing dress up and whatnot, that's in her room.

My kids are 5.5 and 2. shite still gets brought out of the playroom, but the majority stays in there. My wife and I just do a quick pickup every night after they go to bed. Each toy category has a bin and it take 5-6mins to clean everything up.

I think one day my son will...but the smaller the kid the bigger their shite... no way my sons toddler stuff will fit in his room with room to use it

That’s what i mean. Some people have no place where the adults can hang out and be adults. A lot of people have the kids in their bedroom too, whenever they are, and wonder why they don’t have sex anymore.

It always irks me to go into someone’s house and the living room and kitchen are littered with toys and Disney is blasting on the big screen. I think more marriages would survive if adult time and spaces were given more value.
Couldn’t agree more. Parents these days let their kids rule the house. I’ve been to friends houses where we were visiting in the living room with Mickey Mouse club house on. WTF!!!

My daughter is 2 and plays in her room, but she also sometimes brings her toys to other parts of our house to play with us, too
Girls don’t typically play alone. They need/want another person to “interact” with. Boy will play all day in their rooms by themselves(or anywhere). Inside, outside, it doesn’t matter. Now, after puberty they still like to play by themselves but the type of play is dramatically different.

Well, I guess you don’t necessarily have to know how to spell it to do it.
