If employers are unhappy with the Southern University System, then why do so many people get hired to work in different utility, oil/gas, and construction companies.

You seriously do not know the answer to this?

It's RACIST and UNCONSTITUTIONAL Quota/Affirmative Action/Diversity programs that not only get Southern grads hired, but also makes it almost impossible to fire their a$$es.

So does every other university in the U.S. Segregation is over. HBCU's shouldn't be propped up by tax dollars if they can't perform. Let Southern go private like Morehouse, Spelman, or Howard if they want to survive.

I think it should be dissolved, I just think we should dissolve others first. (or let it go private as you suggested)

I noticed from past threads that posters on here tend to view Southern as an unnecessary institution.
The purpose of HBCUs was a very important one that undoubtedly improved the lives of African-Americans (and their future generations) who wouldn't have otherwise been able to pursue higher education.

Thankfully, they are no longer necessary to achieve their original purpose. However, the culture and sense of community created along the way is something to consider; I know I'd personally be pretty heartbroken if LSU were broken down and consolidated with a larger school whose culture and history didn't reflect my own.

Add in the racial element with no one in a hurry to be the "bad guy" in doing the "smart thing," and that eventually leaves Louisiana with one of the largest ratios of four year college & universities to residents in the country. So yes, it's very easy to call Southern (and smaller non-HBCUs like Nicholls and Southeastern) "unnecessary" because they essentially are, which unfortunately water down the value of education from those places in the eyes of the employers. I'm not saying that perception is a correct or fair one, but it is reality.

The CPA exam pass rates for Southern grads is in the 20s (it's around 45% nationally). Grambling is right at 20. Those are the third worst and second worst in the state (congrats, Northwestern).

That tells me that Southern isn't preparing their students for a career in public accounting.

I'm sure that's a blend of the professors and the students themselves.

I don't think "dislike" is the right word. It's nothing personal. There is just a reputation that these students aren't ready for the marketplace, and with employers wanting to do less and less training, it just makes it easier to pass up

This is kind of why I'm saying we need to close down the others first...one at a time in a big plan that that takes 10-15 years to accomplish.

If we want to accomplish anything, we have to not piss off the black population, so we leave Southern for last or don't mess with it at all.

Something is better than nothing.

You admit there is a difference between Tech and Southern in terms of academics then wonder why employers don't care for Southern grads?

If you get a degree that leads to a license or certification you are in good shape, similar to trade school, but if you get out in business or general studies you are basically unemployable and competing with better graduates and those non college educated folks that are already out and have practical experiences.

This is where I really fumbled. I should have studied for the FE examination for engineering. Passing the FE alone would qualify you as an EIT and make getting internships easier.

It’s not a well thought of education and does not have a lot of alumni in hiring positions.

That is pretty telling. The CPA exam should be very very easy if you have an accounting degree plus business related masters for the 150 hours. All you have to do is study for it.

You shouldn't need to study for the FE. It's a time management test. You are given literally every formula you need to pass the test.

Member that time you said you were in line for an E7 position with DOTD? I do.

I didn't attend Southern so my opinions are based on the performance of my peers that went there.

But you having gone to both Tech and SU, would you say there is a big difference in education between the two schools? What are the biggest differences?

The professors and/or whoever chooses the textbooks used is certainly a part of it in the anecdotes I’ve heard.

shite like accounting books and classes that don’t teach concepts like “future value of money” that programs at other schools harp on as extremely important.

The students may be shite but if you aren’t attempting to teach them what they will need, it’s still a failing of the school.

You teach it and they don’t learn? THAT is on the students.

It’s not dislike. They just have no credibility or respect.

I went to southern law and do very well for myself. While the school and admin are fricking dumbasses, so is a majority of the school body. The standards are so low and all just accept it instead of attempting to make it better.

The OP is a great example of how dumb even an engineer can be at Southern.

Edited for fat fingers on cell phone and to say that just about all engineers, while possibly smart, have no common sense or social aptitude.

Privatize Southern and Grambling.

Remove all affiliated institutions with Southern University System.

Many HBCU and even white universities privatize when they are low on funding. I don't see why this hasn't already happened.

Their engineering graduates struggle worse than ULL grads in my experience.

Please list these mysterious "white universities" for the record.

And to your OP, is SU even accredited? Maybe it's their law school that is/was not accredited.

This is only true if you actually pass the exams, which has been a problem.
