I know. Volod is at it again with Southern threads. No, I don't plan on making this a habit again (as I've stated before).

I'm trying to look at my education and job in retrospect. I realize that had I known certain things at the beginning of my college journey, I would have done things differently.

I noticed from past threads that posters on here tend to view Southern as an unnecessary institution. At first I believed the anger was directed at me. But I realized on my job search that its actually pervasive amoung others as well.

If employers are unhappy with the Southern University System, then why do so many people get hired to work in different utility, oil/gas, and construction companies. Maybe it's the marketing of the University that's the problem.

I realize that the students themselves can cause issues with employment. I could have a been a better student, and I realize that's one of my faults. I originally graduated from Louisiana Tech. I just wanted a difference experience and didn't know there would be magnitude of difference in terms of academics.

They just know it's a very crappy school.

ETA:

I think there are several other schools that should be dissolved before Southern IMO. It provides a higher education route for the black community. It has a niche that the other shitty colleges in LA don't really have or that LSU can't make up for.

It's low on the totem pole in a state that has schools with shitty national rankings.

Apparently, LSU grads like myself are stupid and suck too, at least nationally.

I've heard from people in law and my gf in architecture that many owners and managing partners put Southern resumes right in the trash.

ETA: In 8th grade, I was a teacher's assistant where I would grade papers for this 7th grade remedial math class. These kids were getting D's and F's on tests with simple multiplication. One of the girls, ended up getting in to Southern and since then I've understood why some employers don't respect the degree.

The two people I know that did engineering at Southern are total idiots. That's not counting you.

Since you graduated with a SU “engineering degree”, ask yourself, would you take anyone seriously from this institute of higher learning as a hiring manager?

It is just tough for smaller school kids, the Alumni support, the academic performance of the graduate is usually pretty poor, and the degrees offered and faculty are inferior compared to more successful institutions.

If you get a degree that leads to a license or certification you are in good shape, similar to trade school, but if you get out in business or general studies you are basically unemployable and competing with better graduates and those non college educated folks that are already out and have practical experiences.

Dislike? No
Consider for jobs unless they know the graduate? No

I don’t think it’s an emotional relationship. I think most local employers just don’t view it as a quality education.

I don't know if employers dislike Southern grads, but I do know that employees from other universities dislike Southern grads.

Also, I would never hire a lawyer that graduated from Southern, no matter what their reputation might be.

I've spoken to a number of engineers who cringe when they are assigned an intern from SU. Some are great but the general consensus is that in their experience SU Engineering students are typically behind their peers.

I was a rep for my company at their career fair a few years ago. The vast majority of resumes were poorly formatted with multiple grammatical errors including incorrect spelling. Most students were not dressed in any sort of business attire and did not interview well. I will say that a few of the students cared and presented themselves well, but I can see why employers have a negative view of the university after seeing how the majority acted. It's a shame since the students that care will have to deal with that perception of their Alma Mater for the rest of their career.

This is the level of logic I'd expect from someone educated at Southern.

So does every other university in the U.S. Segregation is over. HBCU's shouldn't be propped up by tax dollars if they can't perform. Let Southern go private like Morehouse, Spelman, or Howard if they want to survive.

This falls squarely on the administration and faculty at Southern.

It would be cheap and easy to have a mandatory all day session for each student showing how to craft a proper resume, how to act/dress in professional situations, and offer a service for resume proofreading/formatting.
