Do any of you have separate bank accounts from your wife?

I'm not married but I feel that if I ever get married I'm definitely going to want to keep separate bank accounts. I think taking money out of the equation would lead to a happier marriage.

Thoughts?

We have separate bank accounts for our direct deposits and we have one joint account for savings, play money/vacations

We have separate savings and checking and joint checking and savings. We each have our direct deposit set to put a specific amount into joint checking when we get paid. This pays the mortgage, utilities, Christmas gifts for family/friends, etc. while the remainder that goes into our individual accounts are for us to do with as we please.

Do you split all the bills? I find this ridiculous in a true marriage. It's all community property anyway.

Wife and I have separate accounts.

We also each have separate retirement accounts.

Wife pays the mortgage and all the bills with the house. We split groceries and I pay for the landscaping and house cleaning folks. I also pay for vehicles and car insurance.

What exactly does "to come together as one" mean to you?

Having one joint account promotes communication and accountability between couples.

Having a separate account promotes just the opposite.

We have separate accounts. Although she does have access to mine in an emergency, or in the event of an end of life situation.

If you don't trust your wife enough to share an account then don't. She'll divorce you and take half anyway.

I've never heard that. Doesn't mean anything to me.

Just create a "fake joint account" and put some money in there.

Don't ever show all of your cards.

Separate accounts, joint credit card. I pay everything from my account and she Venmos me every month. We plan to join accounts at some point but until we have kids, it just isn't really necessary. We put everything on the credit card and rack up rewards so it's easy to track everything too.

I do. For plausible deniability reasons for her sake.

You need a legal pre-nup document spelling out separate property agreements to avoid all property acquired after marriage becoming community property in Louisiana. We have one and we only share one joint checking account that pays our medical insurance premiums. To me, separate accounts makes things so much simpler.

I agree, I've never understood the his money / her money approach to marriage.
