Permission shouldn't be an issue, it's a marriage. If you love each other there is a mutual respect and trust and it should function like a partnership/team.

I'm supprised at the number of responses on here that have separate accounts honestly

How long have you been married, and have you ever had a fight about money?

17 years of marriage and not one single fight about money in the last 13 years since we switched to separate accounts.

Thoughts?

I think it's a good idea if you both make good money and like managing your own money.

That's what we do and I much prefer that to trying to keep up with her spending. I also don't like the idea of having to check with her before making purchases, or either of us having to justify our spending.

So you don't discuss large purchases with her before you do it?

We may have separate accounts...but as a courtesy to one another(especially since we are trying to save up for a house) if one of us is spending say more than $400 on something we usually let the other know first.

Money only causes problems when you don't have enough.

19 years married. No real money fights. The bills have to be paid, and a defined amount set aside for emergency fund, then what's left we can spend, but we talk about every big expense beforehand.

Yes.

I have one. For investing. She has no idea. It's been doing awesome and is poised to make a big vertical swing in the next two years if things continue.

If it goes big the plan is to give it to her as a Christmas present one year and use some of the funds for a family vacation to Disney or to glacier national park.

I can't wait. It's been 5 years so far and I want to tel her.

There's an envelope I've put together in the event of my death that has eveything in our accounts laid out including that one so it's not lost.

My bride of 40+ years has her own checking account. Run the house on her account. Mine to pay all the bills. I don't bitch when I have to put additional monies in her account. Life can give us many surprises. And yes I do grocery shop on weekends when we decide what we going to prepare to eat and enjoy each others company. I also do some of the cooking on weekends. Life's good.

Define emergency. That sounds like a good way to get raided after she runs off with her bf.

Yep. We have all separate accounts. We also make about the same in salary. She handles all the groceries and household items and I pay the utilities and other bills. Comes out pretty even.

Of all the things we disagree on, in 10 years we've never fought about money

what makes you think separate accounts takes money out of the equation?

People need to realize that there is no one right way to manage your money as a married couple. Each couple needs to sit down and discuss finances together and decide what works for them. For some...joint everything works, for others all separate works, or a combination of two works.

As long as you are keeping an open conversation about finances with your spouse, who cares?
