ETA. Not that I hope yours ever would.

You are thinking WISE. Wife and I have separate funds and it is one of the best decisions we ever made

Yes I do.
Married 17 years.
2 kids.
I can't complain.

This. My wife spends like 200/mo on her hair, nails, spa days and shite. I think it's stupid, but we can afford it and it makes her happy. Why would I be upset or offended about it unless she hid it behind the veil of a separate account? We consult each other about large purchases and let the small ones slide.

We also each have separate retirement accounts.
well, you can't have joint retirement accounts. hence, the "I" in an IRA.

Sounds like you're a kept man.

Joint checking and savings here. Married 7 years. 2 kids.
We both look at our accounts daily, so no issues here.

All of them. If she can't live off her own means she isn't tapping into mine.

We have 1 joint savings account and 1 joint checking account. Both our paychecks get direct deposited in the same account. There us no mine/hers, everything is ours.

My credit union account through work is only under my name. Basically, I just didn't feel like filling out extra stuff to make it a joint. She is the beneficiary if I die before her though.

We have separate accounts. We have a joint savings account that always has more money in it than either of our checking accounts. If she needs money I transfer it. We also split bills proportionately according to our income. I pay about 2/3 of the bills and she pays about 1/3. I pay for all vacations and specials (e.g., back to school, HOA assessments, etc.). Anything I have left I put into savings, which I do not ask her to contribute to, but give her complete access to the account if she neeeds/wants something (as long as she tells me the amount she withdrew, so i can replenish it for the next car breakdown or surprise tax bill from Uncle Sam).
What she does with the rest of her money is her deal. I don't complain about her spending too much on clothes or shoes and she does not complain about me spending on fishing, hunting or golf.
Not for everybody, but it works for us. She's Type A needs to write in every withdrawal and keep every receipt. If I look at my account twice a month I feel like I have wasted time. We would never be able to have a joint account because of this. The way we do it is not for everyone, but we never fight about money. To each his own.

Having one joint account promotes communication and accountability between couples. Having a separate account promotes just the opposite.
For you, maybe. For me it may increase communications, but they would be in the form of massive fights. We just handle money differently. She knows approximately how much I have and spend, but we cut out the fights about stupid little BS of me not keeping every receipt or her running to a Starbucks every morning when we have a 200$ coffee maker at our house. Just less drama for us doing it this way.

quote:yes, but just for small stuff here and there. For example, my dad and my wife's dad have life insurance. for whatever reason, the check for the policy must come from non-joint accounts.
Do any of you have separate bank accounts from your wife?

We have two joint accounts. We used to have separate.

Yes, separate accounts.
We split the bills. Whatever we have left individually we can spend without asking the other for permission.
If I want to drop $50 on a game I can if I have the money. If she wants to spend $50 on nails or whatever she can. No permission needed and it doesn't effect the other party.
