The sad truth is that nobody can afford to live that way, at least not in a modern society. We know that because the average American doesn’t. They go into debt. Deeply into debt. So deep that the average American now dies underwater to the tune of about $60,000. They’ve spent a lifetime paying off debts that they can never fully make good on — precisely because the system is rigged against them

The craziest irony of all.

Those people we desperately try to impress don't really give a shite.

What percentage of Europeans own their homes compared to America,
for most in America renting is considered a temporary condition. If this person America is now a county of the poor they haven’t been to truley poor country.

Fallacy. In fact, it's rigged in your favor if you have the ability to control your spending.

People make dumb decisions and blame the system.

How much do I pay for internet and TV in Europe? About thirty dollars, give or take. How much do I pay in America? $150.

Cable companies are indeed a ripoff. That's why I cut the cord and I only pay for internet. $60 for high speed. How fast and reliable is the $30 internet in Europe?

quote:

Let’s take utility bills. They’re astronomical in America compared to the rest of the rich world, and even much of the rest of the world period. Heating, electricity, gas, water? These things can easily add up to $500 to $1000 dollars per month. That’s not even factoring in property taxes and maintenance costs and whatnot. Americans have no idea, but in Europe I’d pay maybe — maybe — half that, if even that much.

My electricity + gas + water in a given month is around $200 on the low end and $300 on the high end, which seems to be around the same as he was paying in Europe. Except I don't live in Europe.

quote:

How much does it cost to just…have a place to live? The average American rental is about $1200. That’s for an apartment.

I'm not sure what rent prices are these days, but the last time I did live in an apartment in the early 2010s, a 2 BR 2 BA apartment ran about $750 total, split between my roommate and we were paying $375/mo each. My current mortgage on a 3 BR 2 BA single family house (including taxes and home insurance) runs just over $1000 total.

Stop taking out big arse loans to pay for bullshite college degrees with no career path. I worked full time in college and overtime in the summer and was able to make my tuition installments plus rent and was still able to entertain myself and keep up with schoolwork, and voila I got an accounting degree with no debt. Stop taking out 72 month car loans that maxes out your monthly budget, you're going to inevitably fall behind when something comes up.

People want their dream cars, their dream homes, their dream degrees, and they want it NOW regardless of if they've earned it or not, and when they're unable to keep paying for it and fall into debt, it's never their fault. No, it's your goddamn fault for being greed pigs, and articles like this just reaffirm their beliefs. "The system is rigged against us!" No, it's not rigged, you just made poor choices and now want someone else to bail you out of the hole you dug yourself.

Now, I'm all for bringing back trades in schools and financial literacy classes and life skill classes in HS. We need to stop saying if you don't go to college then you're destined to be a loser. College isn't for everyone and there are other viable paths to have a successful career and life.

The biggest difference is housing. They will legit argue their closet-sized rental is just as good as a home in the US. They will also always argue expense in terms of the peasant's life (remember Europe is still very class conscious). You don't hear about these people who "downsized and love it!" talk about things like, buying a home...or...investing for their retirement.

For perspective:

I live in a craftsman, fully remodeled 1940s house with 2300 sq feet, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, 2 living rooms and a kickass kitchen. After remodel costs and refinance, it was 230k and my mortgage is $1400 a month.

Somebody in NYC will think I’m a simpleton yokel because I’m not willing to pay $3k/month for a 1BR/1BA 1000 sq foot apartment that is a cab ride away from Broadway shows.

The problem is that I don’t begrudge them. If people are happy paying a higher premium to be closer to food and art they love, that’s fantastic. But they are sitting around stewing about the fact that I’m that far removed from “culture” and probably have a different opinion than them about dudes using girls’ bathrooms.

neither do i. but ask, why shite is unnecessarily expensive?

is it solely because of a company being greedy or because somebody, somwhere decided we needed billions of dollar to fund gender research in Pakistan and tax the american taxpayer to fund it?

All 4 of these cost me about 550 a month in a 3,000 sq ft home built in 1940 and I keep the AC on 65 in the summer.

Also Europe has way higher tax rates than here and less average household income.

what I get in America is way, way worse. At least half of the junk on TV is ads, I don’t get the wonderful and illuminating and sparkling stuff that European TV makes on a regular basis, from good coverage of global affairs to politics to economics to ground-breaking shows and movies. I’m getting massively,

So, what you're saying is you really, really appreciate the BBC.

Live cheap for a few years while working hard and saving salary to then move to a poorer country like Mexico to live like a rich person forever.
