Aside from the alleged poorly paid employees which I know nothing about, a big problem for places like Blue Bayou/Dixie Landin (and AstroWorld, Six Flags New Orleans, etc. In the past) is that they made season passes too cheap, and made the parks glorified daycares.

Parents would be dropping off troublemaking kids in the morning and picking them up in the evening, and they would wreck havoc throughout the day inside the parks.

you know, it really was

I was thinking to myself ..why? Why do I have such fond memories of Fun Fair Park?

well...I guess because it was a place I went to often growing up in Baton Rouge back in the 80's...it was always a special place when my parents would bring us....heck, I had my "first date" at Fun Fair Park...

It takes me back to a simpler time in general ....

As a kid during that time I just felt Baton Rouge was a special place.....it had lots to offer.....was a great place to grow up in the 80s.....we had Fun Fair Park and Putt Putt right down Florida Blvd...heck, even South Winds water slide in Denham Springs was the bomb!

unfortunately Baton Rouge isn't that way anymore (at least in my opinion)

so I think that is why I remember Fun Fair Park so fondly,,,not only was it a great place to visit as a kid, but it brings me back to a time in this area when things were just "better"

I’ve told this story before…Sam Haynes Sr was my great uncle on my dads side. I grew up at fun fair park, working the birthday party rooms and running the rides. There was no better place on earth than fun fair park on a weekend night

Having lived off of Old Perkins for the last 15 years, I can say that I and a lot of my neighbors are happy it's closed down.

The EBR government, for some reason, had no desire try and solve the massive traffic problem by requiring the owners to either (a) go back to using the big lot across Highland next to Home Depot as the primary parking lot, or (b) take part in paying for the upgrade of the Highland/Old Perkins intersection.

The result was traffic gridlock every damn day of every summer with an extra 20 minutes of afternoon commute time tacked on to traverse the 300 yards from the I-10/Highland exit to the point on Old Perkins where you finally get past the park entrance.

frick that place.

but the park's owner Sam Haynes Jr. said that the theme park would be closing permanently due to a "lack of attendance."

ot sure exactly where it all went wrong (keep all the race themed comments to yourself) for them, but somewhere along the way, bad business decisions were made and here we are...

I don't know where this myth came from that rich people like to buy shite that loses money just to have a write off, but it usually shows who is business saavy and who isn't.

They killed the summer concerts, then sold season passes for $65. It became a drop off daycare.
Then, they cut the night time hours out and went to an 10-6 schedule.
Night time with all the ride lights and (slightly)cooler weather was the best time to visit the theme park.
You could make a full day of water park, then eat, then go ride some thrill rides.

That’s the kind of person who owns it now.

Yep. Haynes has been running trucks from the ports for 80 years and has more money than most in BR. He just doesn’t talk about it.

That trucking line wasn't much to talk about back in the 90's. At best, he had 10 trucks in the whole fleet.

He does, however, have a good amount of money. That's probably 500 million or more just in rides, buildings, and real estate.

Interesting fact- the Galaxy roller coaster originally came from Pontchartrain Beach Amusement Park in New Orleans. First steel coaster in Louisiana.

Some of the other Fun Fair rides came from that park too

i dont see how an amusement park in ANY major metro area is a viable business these days. unless they make ticket prices sky-high as well as placing the park way out in the suburbs, cultcha is almost certain to destroy the park within a couple of years. and even with high ticket prices and suburb location, it will probably still overtake it.

most metro areas aren't BR and NOLA...

Honestly as an adult I don't see the appeal of a ride park in the Louisiana summer. A water park, sure. But walking around sweating profusely, waiting in line while the sun fries you, sitting in a hot metal ride seat while a hot safety bar secures you in. That's a no for me dog.

I’ve been saying for years, need to sell off all the dry rides, and get a couple new water rides. They have a water coaster at volcano bay and one at Dollywoods water park they could duplicate and a rapids river that is really fun at volcano bay. Add in an extra slide or two and they would bring in some people.

Also need to refurbish some of the old slides. They were in need for years.

They’re bad businessmen

Old man Sam was more worried about you shaving every other day as an employee despite allowing every tom dick and Harry in as a customer.

He has another fleet in New Orleans and still has trucks on the road and has been running since the 50’s. I rode when I was a kid in a couple trucks to the NO port and the Gulfport terminal which wasn’t very big at the time circa 1968 or so. And he’s still running those old Mack Model F series from the 70’s.
