The race system actually failed this guy, just not the race system that will be blamed. The race system that failed was the one that did not challenge him , but instead promoted him based on what he was rather than his accomplishments. He was lead to believe that he could get away with anything, so he did.

I know the man made his own choices and both enjoyed and benefited from his rise... but I feel like all those around him complimenting the Emperor's Clothes should carry a lot of blame.

Old boy would make up the craziest claims and accomplishments that weren’t remotely possible and the academic community would just respond by promoting and praising him. Very sad ending, but it’s insane the blatant lies that he got away with for years.

Well Cambridge fired the professor that started the topic and hired a law firm to persuade the first media source they heard was going to publish an article. Then the London PD opened criminal investigations into the people that asked him for comment.
I think it’s safe to say nobody will accept blame for this on.
