For my wife’s family thanksgiving, every family brings a dish. For my family, everyone chips in and a few of the ladies does one shopping trip together and does the cooking.

I do think at some point guests should step up without asking. We’ve been hosting Thanksgiving ($200+) and Christmas ($400 +) for over 20 years. The only folks to ever offer to help foot the bill were my in-laws and we refused to accept anything from them. We do have some well off siblings and cousins that could offer to have it catered one year, but that will never happen. One actually invited two people we didn’t even know one year!

Idiots. The only thing I would’ve given that douchebag is a laugh and eye roll. How pathetic.

Very rude and a solid 10 on the trashy scale. Your BiL sounds like a real choad IMO.

I would ask him what the spread cost and what their labor and overhead was and make them whole then tell them to kiss my arse and avoid further contact...

Doing it after the fact is bush league.

If he did it before so everyone could choose whether or not they wanted to show is one thing. I still don’t like the move but at least he’s giving y’all the option to skip.

I would have given an extra $2 for the a/c you used while there and 50 cents for each flush. And would make sure everyone else heard me do this

Sounds like he is tired of his freeloading family.

I don’t think I would accept another invite over there after that happened.

Curious to know, how did he bring it up? Was it while everyone was eating around the table with half of their food left or something?

Weird to ask for that after the fact.

We all pitch in to pay for food at Thanksgiving beforehand, but that's because it's my Grandmother cooking it on a fixed income.

He should have told everyone to bring 1 dish to contribute if he didn’t want to buy the whole meal

If I invited people over then asked them to pay for anything, my wife would give me the death stare. She's all about that southern hospitality and this is tacky as shite.
