I grew up in the 40s and 50s, but although few cars were equipped with seat belts, we knew they were important. Here is my high school Driver's Ed instructor demonstrating proper technique for fastening seat belts.

not only did we not wear seat belts, but my dad rarely made us use a carseat.
when i was 6 or 7 and my sister was 3 or 4, we would sit side by side in his little single bench pick up truck. when he saw a cop, he'd tell us to get down and not move.

Not as a kid. Folks could afford the extra money when buying a new car.

Once when i was 4 my Mom had this really old truck, and I was standing up leaning against the door and somehow managed to open the door, and I fell right out of the truck. Speed limit on that road was 45, but luckily we were coming to a red light and going maybe 5-10 mph. Just a tad lucky there lol.
Looking back on that and other things, lots of WTF was my Mother doing moments but it all seemed to be pretty normal back then, which is crazy.

I did, but I remember being so small, sitting in the front seat, that the belt definitely didn't fit. If there had been a wreck, I would have gone flying. No airbags, either.

After like 1985, yes.

It seems like when I was really young in the early and mid 80's I didn't wear one all of the time in the back seat. Maybe just when we were on the interstate or something. Then, I think they made the law where if you were under 12 or something you had to wear one.
I do remember riding in the back of pick-up trucks though and no one gave a shite. That was good fun.
Better be careful...those can take an eye out! Would smash.

yep, i remember riding to and from the biloxi beaches almost every weekend in the back of trucks.
we used to ride in the back of our basketball coach's truck to and from games.
Lap belts were found to cause paralysis in some cases so hey added that annoying shoulder strap.

My mom got mad that a friend's dad let us ride in the back of a truck crossing the Mississippi going from Vidalia to Natchez, and back. The trip back was at night.
I can also remember my brothers, and I, laying down in the back end of the station wagon on trips. We'd have our heads at the back end of the wagon bed. At night, you could see the reflection of everything around us in the back window. We'd have blankets, toys, and games back there. This was the 60's, so there were no Gameboys.

No I did not wear one regularly until after a bad car accident in 1989. Front seats caught my shoulders and stopped me from being ejected. Broke my collar bone on both sides then broke my shoulder blade when the car did a 180 from the collision. Have worn one ever since
