Looking back it seems so weird but nobody in my family wore seat belts growing up in the 70's and 80's. Some of my earliest memories were being stuffed in the "wayback" of our Volvo station wagon in cubby hole amongst the luggage on long trips. I didnt even start wearing a seatbelt until my girlfriend in high school bitched enough that I made it a habit in the 90's Was this just the norm back then?

no. if the vehicles even had them, they were lost somewhere inside of the seats.

with my Dad being a fireman/EMS, yes, he was always very adamant about us wearing our seat belts

Dad tucked them in the seat. Never saw them

Didn’t have a car, but I used to tie myself to my horse when I got really hammered

No. We often stood up on the back bench seat or even squeezed onto the back dash. My youngest sibling came home in my mom's arms. They hadn't installed a car seat.
I didn't start wearing one until I got into a pretty bad accident. If I could go back and smack myself and my parents, I would.

I can remember grandfather used to cut them out when he got a new car.

Not when we were kids. My sister fell out of the car and broke her collar bone one time because she was sitting on the arm rest and the door wasn't closed all the way. Luckily we were still in the neighborhood and not going that fast

70s - no
80s - yes
there was a big push around 1980 or so that seemed to finally get us to the point we started wearing them.
anyone remember all the mid 80s cars with seatbelts on tracks that automatically went over you when you started the car?

LOL, no. I used to sit on the passenger door armrest of mom's Buick with my arm out the window. On long family trips, I slept on the shelf under the rear window (my sisters took the rear seat and floor). Good times.

Only if we were in the front seat.

I grew up when seatbelts were not in most cars, and by the time they were standard in cars, I hardly ever wore one.
I didn't really start wearing them until they started issuing tickets for not wearing them because even though it did become a law, most police didn't bother enforcing it.
ETA: Hell, I remember sitting on the sides of pick-up beds rolling down the road as a kid in my uncles pick-up truck on the way to going fishing. If we wanted to feel safe, we'd sit on the humps of the wheel wells that were about 1 ft. lower into the bed.

No. My parents arms were my seatbelt

Couldnt stand up on the seat if you had it on. I dont think the back seats even had them. People concentrated on driving back then, not on their phones.

Yep. We had an 88 Camry that had those...along with the weird design trend in GM cars to connect the seatbelts to the doors.
