I went from 5'6 at the end of 8th grade to 6'1 at the end of 9th.
My oldest is 11 and is sprouting big time. He'll be taller than his mom by his 12th birthday.
It happens, you just can't anticpate when.

aging slowly is benefitting me now
My 11 year old daughter has the age slow gene from me. It's odd, I definitely have the age slow, I was still losing baby teeth going into 8th grade. My wife was the age quick one.
Older daughter favors wife, ages slow
Middle daughter favors me, ages fast
11 year old is rock solid. She's like 4'8-4'10 and 115 lbs, strong as shite for her size and crazy athletic.

One school year I'd be chubby and average height, and the next school year I'd be tall and skinny. And eventually I settled into tall and sort of chubby.

I grew six inches between end of school year for 9th grade and start of school year for 10th grade (3 months). Change was so dramatic that kids I went to school with for my entire life didn't recognize me.

I was 6’ at 12 and my balls dropped so much earlier than most that I was confused when they were talking about it in middle school

dental development and skeletal maturation are largely separate processes
Well the endocrinologist I talked to said they're very often correlated if you remove environmental variables, but I'll take your word for it.

I think by 8th grade I was already 5'8 or so... ended up 5'11.

I must have grown a foot between 10th and 11th grade. It was crazy. My youngest son was similar and even later. It hurt him in football because he was short and undersized. They never had a good place to put him. Over last spring and summer, going into his senior year he shot up to 6' 1". Coach moved him to TE for Senior season and he got to play a lot more. My oldest son is 6' 2", just barely shorter than me and he grew gradually. Didn't happen all at once like myself and youngest son.

My son was the shortest, or very close to it, boy in his class all the way through middle school. He grew to six feet tall between the beginning of the second semester of his freshman year and the beginning of his sophomore year.

Fat plays a bigger part of it than people realize. Hormones have to have the fat to do there thing.

You can get a good guess about his final height by doing an online growth calculator and following the pediatrician's growth chart thus far. It's also roughly his height at age 2 doubled.
As far as growth spurts, that's just unpredictable. Some kids follow a steady growth by getting wider then leaner/taller over and over while others stall out and then shoot up over night.
Just tell him to keep eating healthy food and getting good sleep. That's about all you can do outside of genetics.

His mom is 5’9 and she’s the shortest person in her entire extended family. Grandmother is 5’11. Grandfather is 6’3. Uncle is 6’5. Bit further out, they have a few guys over 6’8. My side of the family is very…Southern Louisiana. I’m 5’7.
But how tall is his father?

He’s gonna be short like you

My son has always grown consistently and gradually. My nephew had a few of extremely painful growth spurts.

i was one of the shorter kids in 7th and 8th grade and it felt like in less than a year i was 6-1 entering high school

My oldest had a huge spurt when he was 13. He came back to school a head taller than most of the boys in his class. He’s a Senior now and he is 6’4”. I’m 5’10” and my dad and father in law are shorter than me. Wife is 5’4”. Not sure where it came from
I’ve got some bad news for you…
