Did you know you can own your own private rail car & attach it to an Amtrak train?

only ~100 private cars in operation in the US, they are extremely expensive (~$300k+) + Amtrak charges ~$5/mile.

But there are 100 rich train lovers out there!

97 of them are mine, Elon owns 1, Jeff owns 1, and I gifted 1 to my butler for Christmas last year.

Man, I haven't seen one of those in years! Do you have the 2.8L model, or just the 2.5?

That's on top of however much the feds are subsidizing them.

That's not half of it. Check out the rate sheet: LINK

$200 to park overnight
$700 in Chicago
$3800 per month to store it

$1000 "terminal switching" I assume this means move on/off the train

$2000/day if you are heavy enough to require an extra engine

This is no joke. You could fly first a lot of places for this kind of money.

I've always wanted to buy one of these but I keep getting sidetracked.

Plus you have to buy your own private spur to store it when not in use. I'd enclose it like a garage.

That’s actually super interesting. I had no idea.

$300k actually isn’t that bad, either. I mean, a decent RV isn’t too much cheaper. The $5/mi is where the price gets crazy.

Yes. Used to see them occasionally on the back of Amtrak trains in Glenwood Springs.

Worked on a project with the owner of Patron. He has a train car that he travels around in. When in Nola it’s parked right across the rail tracks from the French market.

Pretty weird, but really cool. Like walking into a time capsule to the British Raj.

It just seems weird to want to do something like this. Outside of some areas of the northeast, Amtrak train travel sucks arse as it's slow and very often unpredictable schedule wise.

I think the benefit of a private train car is that it’s essentially a self-driving rv.

However, I cannot imagine a scenario where it’s a cost-effective way to travel. It’d be cheaper to just hire a driver for your rv or yacht.
