Because taking a test replicates real world conditions and scenarios.

We can argue all day if tests are a valid form of revealing professional real world skills, but you have to have some sort of barometer to measure folks against each other, and today that barometer is an exam.

Fairly or unfairly these exams determine the future course of people's lives, therefore, it is not unreasonable to ask for a level playing field when taking them.

Mine caught up with me in college. I learned through the homework, and made up for being a space cadet in elementary and high school.

If you need extra time to take a test why won't you need extra time to perform work task? Would you feel comfortable knowing your doctor who needed to make a life saving decision needed extra time in order to pass his med school test, because I know I wouldn't.

No, you just don't know what real ADHD is...you only know what you think you know and it's based on your own personal experience. Having a short attention span is not even remotely close to ADHD. It's a neurobiological disorder. You can actually watch the brain on meds of someone with ADHD and someone without...completely different brain functions. But keep on with your self-inflated smarts.

Did you know that Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny actually aren't friends and have a long standing rivalry?

They also get special treatment in grad school. We take our exams over 4 hrs and people with ADD/ADHD just have to fill out a form and they get 6-8hrs depending on the exam.

It's quite a load of bullshite considering part of what makes our exams difficult is the time crunch, so that totally doesn't apply to them.

I think he's suggesting that he could fool a doctor, not that he actually has it. I doubt most diagnoses for ADHD include a detailed analysis of amphetamines working in the brain.

lmao...so much fail in this thread. Kids with real ADHD are not looking for a leg up. They are looking for any way to simply survive and move on to the next grade. It's about simply graduating high school since that's what is required in society. The thought of college or a "profession" is a pipe dream for parents of kids with ADHD.

Well that's the idea behind accommodations and medication.

It's a work around for students who are smart enough to comprehend and apply the material, but have a deficiency that makes it difficult to complete the exam under standard conditions.

Oh yeah. I also knew a girl in law school who got all kinds of Native American scholarships and benefits. She was lily white, but wore a turquoise necklace. I should have primed that pump too.

I think you are confusing ADHD with intelligence and critical thinking skills. Most people with ADHD think really well on their feet.

no i could have been diagnosed with it. my father, brother, and sister are all diagnosed with it. i had very similar issues as my sister (brother was much more extreme) but i was much better at swooping in at the last minute and saving the day, or creating systems to get around the work

like in 1st grade i wouldn't pay attention in math but could make 100s on the tests (we're talking simple multiplication here) b/c i realized that the tests were basically a developing pattern (1x2, 2x3, 2x4, etc) so i just had to get the first 2 right and BOOM i could solve the entire test. boom. then i had a full hour to go frick off in lala land. i actually got busted because i went from 100% every test to like a 25% and actually had to have a parent-teacher meeting about it and i explained my mistake (i got like the 2nd one wrong or didn't look at the entire pattern of the test) and why i made the 25% and the teacher was just like, mouth open.

but it was like a reward or punishment. i could figure it out and do something faster and then get the reward of space time, or just not pay attention and do space time first and then be forced to figure out a way to get myself out of the trap. i did that shite in law school, because i didn't read or pay attention during class

ADHD is a completely different animal than what you are describing. It's one of those things that you can legitimately say, "Unless someone close to you really has it, you have no idea what it is."

And, the fact that you think the medication is "performance enhancing" tells me that you don't understand what I'm talking about. They are performance enhancing to someone with ADHD like someone who wears glasses to see something closer to 20/20. But, if someone else put on those same glasses, they could see twice as far and twice as clearly as 20/20.
