When I was a kid in the 70s, we had three window unit A/Cs. One in the dining room, one in mom’s room, one in my room. During the summer, id close my door at night and crank that giant 220w beast up on high. I’d sleep with two blankets on my bed.
As for vehicles, my mom bought a new Buick every three years. The first I can remember her having was a 1974 Buick Regal. The thing was a land battleship. I am not 100% certain, but I’m pretty sure it had A/C. I know all the ones after it did.

I grew up in Grays Knob Kentucky mother fricker. We didn't know wat AC was.

Grew up mostly in New Orleans. Neither house nor car nor schools had AC. We had an attic fan in our house. The parents put AC in after I'd moved out in the 80s. Before that it was a trip having people from up north visit. Our dining area was in the kitchen where my mother would cook and then feed everyone gumbo in the summer heat.

Up to the age of 8, I lived in a house that had 2 window units, one in the kitchen, one in our parents bedroom. No A/C for us boys.
Just before we moved out of town, Dad bought a car with A/C, before that it was open windows.
Funny thing was my maternal grandmother’s home had only window units, but it really wasn’t bad at all. We used to visit her it seemed every other weekend. She had tall ceilings and an attic fan and it would cool things off even in summer. In fall, winter and spring we had to sleep under heavy blankets, it would get so cold.

Houses were built for better air flow. Also ceiling fans are less common now but super effective

House did. None of the first three cars had AC.

Had window units in each room of the house.. It was/is an old uptown house (4000 sq ft?).. I remember seeing the power bill in the early 80's and it was over $400... I would hate to see it now... Pretty sure the people that bought it put central AC in...
A good friend didn't have AC in his parents home for years.. Same time period in the early 80's the dad finally broke down and put in central... What a difference going over there and not sweating my balls off...

First car was a jeep. I didn’t even have a top or a a heater. Definitely no AC.

Had attic fans in the 60's and graduated to window air conditioners in the 70's until we got central air in our third house.
Went to C.E. Byrd in Shreveport. Three stories and no air conditioning except for the journalism room on the third floor. Needless to say I loved working on the school newspaper.

I had a 440 AC in my car. Sounded good to the chicks. 4 windows down at 40 mph. Worked great.

Yes and no.
I survived by bringing a change of shirt and it’s not bad when you are moving. Just at the red lights. And yes it was hot as frick then, and add the heat coming off the other cars.

Grow up without A/C in our house. Dad bought an A/C while I was in high school @1969. First and second car did not have a/c.

I will forever feel guilty because my dad had a 60something Chevellle SS with no AC when I was born. My mother said as a baby I’d cry whenever she’d carry me towards it (we lived in Thibodaux) so she made him get rid of it and he traded it in.
Dad turns 80 day after tomorrow, and he’s never said a word about it to me but I still feel terrible about him having to give up that car because of me.
The Malibu we got in its place had AC but I remember leaving a crayon in the door handle well when we went to the Houma mall on day and the crayon melted.

No. But I grew up 700 miles north of Baton Rouge. We had an awesome Attic fan at night.

My first truck was a Chevy. No AC, no power steering, vinyl seats. I had a towel draped on back of seat and on the bench all summer every summer. 100 degrees sitting in traffic with windows down…. Didn’t bother me because you get used to it fast.
AC out at home nowadays… class 1 flashing red emergency!!

No and No. Never had a window unit. My old man said they were too loud. Grandparents never had A/C. They grew up during the Depression. My dad even hated box fans. He said all they did was blow around hot air. Dad didn't get central air until I was a sophomore in college. Old man didn't get a car with air conditioning until I was in high school by then they were standard. LOL.

No. And. No. We made it. Sometimes in the shade.

Window unit only. And we had to put in a second one in 1980 during the heat wave. Never got central air put in until after my parents died.
My first car had AC.
