Kroc didn't screw anyone. He offered. they accepted. end of story.

Sounds like a Kroc of shite to me. shite in between two pieces of bread to be exact.

Maurice and Dick were probably two decent fellas focused on doing good hamburgers and efficiently. Kroc OTOH sounds like an absolute POS who has no interest in quality as much as he does profit alone, and that explains the shite in between two pieces of bread we’ve learned to accept as McGarbage. It’s the business model for all of these national chains. It’s pure business, nothing else. They don’t care about their product, just that you buy as loads of it.

Time though, they are a changing

its more accurate to say they lacked the vision to grow big and fast to become a national brand.

they had something good and were just happy to stay small and thats why they sold out rather then go big time

If the movie is accurate, they didn't want to expand so the 2.7 million is probably more than they would have made with a couple of cheap burger stores.

Kroc definitely exploited their concept and he cheated them out of the royalties but they were not good businessmen relying on a handshake. Kroc was able to see a great idea and he accepted the right advice. McDonald's would never have become the behemoth it became without Kroc's ambition.

How many locations did Kroc have at this time? I'm thinking HE likely could have rebranded it all for less than 2.7 million in total costs/losses.

There's been a helluva lot of deals done with handshakes, some bigger than that. You damn sure better know who you are shaking hands with.

The era of the handshake deal is over, though.

Now, you shake hands and then draw up the papers.

The brothers wanted to run one restaurant.

They got to run their restaurant and were paid handsomely to do so while Krock worked hard to create an Empire.

We should all be so lucky.

They were naive, and he was a snake. It was both their faults, but Kroc profited from it obviously.

A man is his word. This all happened in a different time when that actually had value. Not this current lawyer ridden back stabbing culture.

If they shook on it and the corporate stooge didn’t follow through, then they were screwed.

Interesting theory considering they have 33,000 locations.

Used to be, pre 1990. They changed the oil that the fries were fried in and the fries have never been the same. Youngsters don’t even know.

If I'm not mistaken, McDonalds is the largest landowner in the world.

Also, if the movie is accurate, it was really Harry Sonneborn who got Kroc to understand the real estate was where the money was.

As it pertains to food, diet, and palate, numbers do not translate to being right, especially in America. I’ve half assed better burgers that McGarbage has ever put out. It’s really not that difficult to do so. Anyone with a half an ounce of desire to do a good burger can easily accomplish that feat.

I believe that is the Catholic Church. McD’s might be the biggest corporate landowner though.

The brothers weren't stupid. They were geniuses at a certain aspect of business (which wasn't franchising).

Good movie. Handshake deal was dumb but everyone profited. The only jacked up part is that the enormous business is still named McDonalds. If movie is true, Keaton stated in it that the name was the real reason he knew it would work, so the brothers basically sold their family name for pennies on the dollar.
