Kroc franchised it and made no money. He then bought the land and leased it to owners building a franchise and eventually bought them out due to only leasing the land was what was making profits

If you’ve seen the movie you’ll know it worked so well they needed 6 of them.

Damn right did you see the movie? They were making like 20 shakes at the same time before Kroc decided to use the milk based mix that you put in the machine which is of course supposed to work but hardly does.

Before the second brother died, he had a curse placed on the chain. Something about ice cream machines not working.

It seems they did not have the ability to think of it but I would have kept my one store and said I dont have to listen to what you do.

Kroc had to twist their arm to begin with, they didn't want to franchise at all. He finally convinced them, paid them handsomely, and eventually they got bought out. Nobody screwed anyone. Well, Kroc screwed that investor's wife in Minnesota.

$2.7 million then is probably $30 million today.

I'd be ok with $30 million even if the new owner made OT baller money. I'd live like a king off that.

Kroc saw ways to cut costs and increase profits, but couldn't execute due to his contract with the McD brothers and their disagreements with the ideas.

uh, McDs wouldn't be a household name because of their limitations. Yet they are well enshrined as an American icon. So, pocketed 2.7M in 1950s money, and lent their name as cultural icons

If I'm not mistaken, McDonalds is the largest landowner in the world

You're mistaking.

They are one of the largest corporate land owners, though.

So he had a handshake agreement with them to give them 1% of revenues but never did it. Sounds like he was a pretty big scumbag.

The "screwing" was that Kroc supposedly promised the McDonalds a royalty in perpetuity that wasn't in writing. This is emphasized in the movie, but doubtful in reality. No one ever claimed this handshake deal occured except one nephew of the McDonalds, after they died.

In your opinion, did they get screwed by Kroc, or were they stupid and deserving of their fate?

They were stupid to not get a contract for the royalties and relying on a handshake, but they would have never had the vision that Kroc had anyway.

I think the $2.7 million they got for the trademark was compensation enough, they would have never made that much if Kroc had never come along. Not to mention that $2.7 million was a lot of money in that time period.

Ironically, Kroc met the brothers trying to sell them ice cream machines.

That TL;DR stuff really makes you look educated and smart. Good job for posting something that actually has no meaning to the topic other than McD's rots your teeth.
