My understanding is that for a very long time McDonald's and Coca Cola had nothing but a handshake agreement. I think that's still the case today but can't tell through a quick internet search.

In 1958 at the start of the year, the DJIA was trading at $439.27. Had they sunk 10% of their wealth into it, that 10% would be worth over a billion today (almost a 6000% return, and thats assuming they didnt set it to dividend reinvest). And they easily could have lived off the dividends. Unreal.
