That one is based on the original (loosely) but seemingly not at all affiliated with it or Mickey Gilley in any way. Owned by Phil Ruffin/Treasure Island hotel and Casino.

I went there with my fraternity brothers on the way to the LSU Aggie game. It was an ironic spirit sort of visit. I used to say I was the first person ever to ride that bull in plaid . Because I was frattin super hard, see.

Urban Cowboy is my favorite movie ever. I watched it less than 2 weeks ago for the 152nd time.

Anyhoots. Here's some good shite for any of you websleuths if you can find it

Aaron Latham(a screenplay writer and author of the source material) kept a journal during the entire process of making the movie. That part is no secret as he donated those papers to the Harry Ransom Center at University of Texas

Here's a pic of it.

My million dollar question is WTF happened to the online versions of Latham's journal? Ya see, fellow OTers, that journal had a LOT of dirt in it. I read it over 10 yrs ago. I had it saved in mhtml format so I could read it offline at work(we had strict web nazis). It was VERY interesting stuff especially if you love the movie.
Lots of details on how they came up with scenes and locations. And some real good shite about Debra Winger being a slut in her hotel room while John Travolta was over there inviting male prod assts to his room and plying them with booze and blow for blowjobs.

But one day(I think Latham posted it under a blog site) the site went Poof! And the Journal was gone

Someone find that mfer with a web time machine thingy. I'll buy you a beer.
Cuz i'm not wasting time when I'm in Austin for the LSU game to go make copies of it myself at the Ransom Center.

My theory is Travolta paid him off to delete that site and then he paid a web scrubber service to get rid of cyber trail of that journal.

All this time I thought i was the only loser on Earth who read that whole thing, and then wondered whatever happened to it.

I too read it probably 10 years ago; not even sure how i stumbled across it online, but once i saw it, i read it over the course of a couple of weeks.. VERY interesting reading, and i’m not surprised it’s gone, since the entire time i was reading it, all i could think was ‘How the hell hasnt this guy been sued by Travolta (and lots of others) for making this public?!’

I don’t remember a ton of details anymore, but i do recall, kinda to touch on what you said, that at one point Debra Winger was in her apartment (according to the journal, she was staying at those old rundown apartments across Richmond from the Galleria, The Oak something i think?) on the bed with Travolta sucking on one teat and the director Bridges sucking on the other, with the writer (Latham) watching the whole thing... Also lots of details about her staying out every night and barely being conscious enough to film her scenes... Oh, and Travolta sneaking out every night to go to an adult movie theater to watch (presumably gay?) porn.. no internet in those days baws, and VERY few people had VCRs yet.

Wouldnt mind reading through it again to refresh my memory.

Some friends dragged me to it. I knew it would be horrible but ended up going anyway. It was much worse than I expected. Smoky. Country music. Buncha wanna be cowboys and cowgirls everywhere.

Exactly. He had some DETAILS in that shite. And yes he was very blatant about Travolta and MALE assistants who wanted to be in his good favor. They'd be at his room nightly.
And Winger was a straight up whore. Her version of how she got the part and blah blah was bullshite. She fricked her way into that movie. And I'm glad she did. She's a Perfect Sissy.
I believe Latham posted it on his blogging site. And I stumbled on to it by chance seeing something about the original article that blossomed into the movie.

About four or five times back to in the late 70s, it was fun as hell. I rode the bull once, I think they started it on 11, I flew off that thing and said never again. Had a friend get hammered there and crawl in the back of the wrong truck to pass out, he almost ended up in Starks, Louisiana. Had another friend get his Moms Camaro stolen while he was banging a chick he picked up there. It was a blast.

Winger rocked that cowboy hat in UC. I hope someone fricked her at her apartment with that hat on.

About 5 years ago I was leaving a bar here in Dallas and Mickey Gilley was on the sidewalk walking in. I tried to shake his hand but his entourage cut me off post haste. May have been because I had a good buzz and was yelling Mickey! Mickey! Mickey! as I walked towards him. He looked pretty frail too.
